Exact date when UK will finally warm up as Arctic-conditions swamp Britain

Brits despairing at layering up in the mornings to deal with the freezing temperatures have been assured warmer conditions are around the corner.

Most of the country has been bitterly cold following a mild start to the New Year.

However while Scotland has been warned it can expect snow next week, other parts of the country will see temperatures steadily begin to increase.

And then we will be able to put away the big coats for good after Saturday, January 28, when we will see double figures in the south west of England.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “From this weekend we could see double figures in the south west of the country.

"We can't rule out wintry weather for the rest of the season but we are moving away from the cooler temperatures.

"From the weekend it will be more average for the time of the year, it's getting warm in the coming days. "

Last night the organisation put out an urgent weather warning for freezing fog into this morning as Brits woke up to uncertain conditions.

The yellow warning was issued for the south west of England until 8am today.

Low temperatures and long travel times were expected.

The Met Office states: "Freezing fog will lead to difficult driving conditions and could cause travel delays in some areas.

“Slower journey times with delays to bus and train services possible. There is a chance of delays or cancellations to flights."

It comes amid warnings the nation is set for the return of snow up and down the country in February with temperatures tumbling to -8C with the impact of a polar vortex.

Another cold snap will soon be hitting the country (PA)

A north-south divide has seen warm air coming from the Atlantic which has been pushing temperatures close to double figures in the north of Scotland but it is a lot colder in southern and central England.

Maps from WXCharts show there is wintry weather on the way next month and by February 10 there could be 15 centimetres of snow falling and temperatures of -8C.

And the weather could be caused by the end of a polar vortex where winds spin around the North Pole and keep cold air trapped in the Arctic.

A knock-on effect is a weaker jet stream, which usually brings our mild westerly Atlantic breezes, therefore opening the door to Arctic air plunging towards Britain, usually about two weeks later.
