Ex Tesco worker praised for heart-warming checkout rule she would always follow

A former Tesco worker has been applauded by shoppers for revealing the heart-warming rule she would always follow whenever behind a checkout till. The woman explained what she would regularly do on TikTok, which quickly captured the attention of many.

The ex-supermarket employee, named Louisa, where she posts under the username @louisasheringham, said that she would always talk to each customer she served while at the till. She said the rule originally came from her manager, who she says would tell staff to make conversation with shoppers.

As reported by the Daily Record, her reason behind following the rule was surprisingly thoughtful, as she told viewers that for some people, her conversation with them may be the only chance they get in a day to talk to somebody. Adding that for those shoppers, a bit of small talk might go a long way.

"When I used to work in Tesco, my manager told me that I should try and start a conversation with everybody who comes through my till. Because you never know, it might be the only person that they're talking to that day." She said.

While her rule would usually result in enjoyable encounters, Louisa did claim that sometimes it would lead to quite awkward exchanges. While recalling one experience that left her 'internally screaming', she said she asked a customer: "Hi. Is that everything for you today?" to which they responded: "Yes, that's everything."

Upon asking the shopper how they were doing, they responded back by saying: "My wife is dying." She then asked if the customer who shared the harrowing information had a Clubcard, to which he simply said: "No."

Since sharing her rule and experiences online, her video has reached more than six thousand views, with hundreds of comments from people - many of which sharing their own experiences.

One user shared a more positive experience, writing: "I did this when I worked in supermarket shop was empty and this old lady was genuinely happy to talk to me she left with a big smile on her face."

Another stated: "I had a customer tell me about how she felt like her husband didn’t love her and the kids anymore and asked me if I thought she should leave him."

A third joked: "And this is why I use self-service! No hate to you at all, but I can’t stand the small chit-chat," to which Louisa responded: "I hope you find peace in the fact it’s not consensual for us either."

The Daily Record has contacted Tesco for comment.
