Ex-Sunderland man Aiden McGeady close to joining Hibernian and a reunion with Lee Johnson

Former Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady looks set to sign for Hibernian after being released in May - reuniting him with Lee Johnson.

The 36-year-old left the Stadium of Light after five seasons in which he scored 36 goals and made 34 assists in 150 games across all competitions.

But the winger’s influence lessened to just 14 appearances this season - albeit with three goals and four assists - and the release at the end of the month was on the cards for some time.

And, according to Record Sport , the Republic of Ireland international is set for a reunion with one of his former bosses at the Black Cats in Johnson.

The two were together in the north east during large parts of the 2021/2022 campaign, before Johnson was sacked in January following a 6-0 defeat against Bolton Wanderers.

He moved up to Easter Road in May and is hopeful that McGeady will be joining him, admitting he has a ‘strong relationship’ with the tricky winger.

“I have got a strong relationship with Aiden, he is a fantastic player with unbelievable feet. He gets to the corner of the box then often there’s an assist or a shot at goal.” Johnson said. “He is 36 so whether it’s us or anyone else he has nothing to prove but a lot to prove as well.

“He is a maverick, he is a challenging but inspiring character to have in your squad and whoever gets Aiden McGeady for a year or two will have an exceptional player and person."
