Ex-Scotland rugby international diagnosed with prostate cancer

A former rugby star has told how he discovered he had cancer after his television presenter wife urged him to get checked out. Kenny Logan told BBC Breakfast how he was listening to a podcast hosted by wife Gabby Logan when he thought about his own health.

Gabby had then encouraged him to go and get checked. And to their shock they discovered he had prostate cancer.

Speaking on the TV show he said he was diagnosed in February. He told viewers: "I was actually listening to one of the episodes about menopause about women and their hormones falling off a cliff whereas a man takes longer to fall off a cliff.

"As I was going through this in my head, and I thought 'what about me', 'what is happening to me', and Gabby said that I should go and get checked. I went to get a wellness check. I sat down with the guy and he said that everything was fine, your hormones are fine but your prostate is high, your PSA is high. I asked what he meant and he said it is your prostate so you should go and get checked.

"Within three-four months I had a biopsy. They said there was something there but just to keep and eye on it.

"But this year, on February 7, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which was a huge shock." He added: "I ended up deciding to take it out.

"So I'm now three months since the operation, had the prostate out. And I'm probably 95 per cent back to normal, maybe 90 per cent back to normal.

"It’s hard when you’re told you’ve got cancer – and I’d literally fell over it, I didn’t see it coming, no symptoms whatsoever – I had to go looking for it."

Gabby said: "That was the shocking thing for both of us. The day before he went in for his operation he had done a bike session. He had no pain, he had no symptoms. He had to have very invasive surgery which takes a long time to recover from and you were going to feel a lot worse afterwards. But we are very, very lucky."

Gabby's podcast, The Mid Point, has recorded an "honest" look at their journey in tackling the disease which will be available from Wednesday. It also features advice and information from experts including Kenny's consultant.

The couple have also urged other men to get checked out when they hit their 50s. Kenny said: "Go looking for it if you are 50 - I was 48/49. Go get a blood test at your GP."
