Airdrie No.2 Callum Fordyce says the signing of ex-Rangers and Dundee United midfielder Charlie Telfer shows the club’s ambition.
And he says the 27-year-old is already well-known to several Airdrie players, having come through the youth set-up with striker Calum Gallagher and been at Ibrox at the same time as boss Rhys McCabe.
Fordyce says Telfer, pictured right, brings quality to the side, and reckons that’s the type of signing they’ve been trying to make since taking the reins at New Broomfield.
He said: “Charlie is a player that we admire.
“He was in with us earlier on in pre-season, and we’re delighted to get it over the line. It will be a welcome addition.
“He’ll bring a lot of quality and experience to the team. He’s played at the highest level in Scotland.
“It boosts us and will give us a better opportunity in games with his experience and stuff like that.
“I’ve played against Charlie for many years, same with a lot of the boys and the gaffer.
“He came through the same youth team as Calum Gallagher at Rangers, he was at Dundee United with Cammy Ballantyne, so he knows a few of the boys and he brings good quality to the side.
“It’s good, and it will provide good competition for places as well, which is always healthy.
“We always said we wanted to try and find the right type of player and Charlie fits the bill for us.
“We said from day one that we didn’t want to rush in to sign players. You want that right player for the changing room, the right calibre of player and the right quality of player, and we’ve done that with Charlie.
“It shows the ambition of the club, what the manager is trying to do, the way we want to move forward, and he suits our style of play, so hopefully it’s going to be a successful one.”
Fordyce says Airdrie might not be finished on the transfer front, either.
He added: “There’s still a loan market open, so you’re always looking to see what is available.
“There are always wee gems that might pop up for you, so if there’s other ones that can come, then great.”
