Ex-Rangers boss Steven Gerrard opens up on lingering regrets after Neil Lennon clash

Steven Gerrard admits he wishes he hadn't been so over-exuberant with his Parkhead celebrations - and regrets clashing with Celtic boss Neil Lennon.

The former Ibrox manager watched his players win their first derby day in 15 tries and couldn't hide his delight when Niko Katic's winner hit the net.

On the full-time whistle the 41-year-old lapped it up, yelling into Sky Sports' cameras and jumping around the technical area with his players.

The win took his side two points behind Celts with a game in hand that New Year's Day but Gerrard regrets his antics that day, reports Football Scotland.

"I remember once we beat Celtic at Celtic Park and there'd been a lot of mud-flying with ex-players and pundits in the media and all that," he told Gary Neville on the Overlap.

"It's not like I go looking for it but we beat Celtic and I was probably a little bit over (exuberant) with my celebrations on the pitch and with Neil Lennon which I regret but at the same time it's like a constant wind-up from their side with all their success.

"I feel it, I'm not emotional, not perfect at it but it's definitely something that I feel like I'm working on and getting better at.

"I think balance is so important at this level. You've got to enjoy the wins because they're tough to get and that's the good part.

"But at the same time a lot of people are looking to me and that's why it's important to be balanced, I don't want to be on the ceiling when we win or on the floor, I want to get the balance right with really enjoying the win and showing people how much it means because people can feed on that.

"But I don't want people to see me on the floor feeling it and wearing it even though you've got to be an actor at certain times. You've got to keep it in and that's what I've been trying to work on because it's an important part."
