Ex-NRL player Wiliame named Bulldogs women's coach

Former NRL player Brayden Wiliame has been announced as Canterbury's inaugural NRLW head coach less than three months out from their first game.

The Bulldogs announced Wiliame's appointment on Monday after would-be coach Blake Cavallaro resigned in January, with reports citing an undisclosed relationship with a female staffer at the time.

Wiliame has most recently worked for the Warriors in wellbeing and pathways and played 48 NRL games between stints at Parramatta, Manly, St George Illawarra and the Auckland-based club.

The journeyman outside back retired from playing in 2023, having also made 77 appearances for Catalans in the Super League.

"Brayden comes to the Bulldogs with valuable experience from his playing career," said Bulldogs general manager of football Phil Gould.

"His understanding of the game at an elite level provides him with unique insights that will benefit our women's program tremendously."

On a two-year deal, Wiliame will take charge of a roster headlined by veteran prop Holli Wheeler and playmaker Tayla Preston, who have both joined from Cronulla.

The squad is also comprised partially of players from Canterbury's women's premiership side, who narrowly missed out on a semi-final berth last season.

The Bulldogs are one of two new sides entering the NRLW for 2025 as the Warriors prepare to play their first campaign since COVID-19 restrictions forced them out of the 2021 season.

The new season begins on July 3.
