Former North Melbourne coach David Noble has made the call to move away from football, becoming boss of the Supercars' iconic Shell V-Power Racing team.

Since being sacked by the Kangaroos in July, Noble has carefully weighed up his next job.

But the 55-year-old has decided to take the reins of the famous Dick Johnson Racing team as Supercars prepares for the highly-anticipated introduction of Gen3 cars next year.

Noble had been touted as future AFL club chief executive when he was football manager of the Brisbane Lions between 2017 and 2020, before unexpectedly being offered the opportunity to coach North.

He led the Kangaroos to just five wins in 38 games in charge, following previous off-field jobs with the Western Bulldogs, Adelaide and the Lions.

Noble will replace the esteemed Ryan Story in the job, who will remain with Shell V-Power as a non-executive chairman.

"David has excellent experience in business and sports administration at the highest level and he is a perfect fit for this team," Story said.

"This restructure also means that I am stepping down from the day-to-day running of the Shell V-Power Racing Team.

"We have the perfect people in place who continue to lead on and off the track."

Noble was unveiled by Shell V-Power at the Adelaide 500, the Supercars' final round of 2022.

"The opportunity to work with Shell V-Power Racing Team in such a competitive industry is incredibly exciting and a challenge that I am looking forward to," he said.

"It is a privilege to be working in such a well respected and iconic business."
