Tyrod Taylor is suing LA Chargers team doctor David Gazzaniga for more than £4million after the quarterback was left with a punctured lung following treatment.
Taylor, 33, joined the Chargers back in 2019, but it was the following year when he picked up a rib injury and received treatment from Gazzaniga and the Newport Orthopedic Institute south of Los Angeles. However, according to Taylor, a pain-killer injection then went horribly wrong.
The now New York Giants player is claiming he suffered a lung puncture from the jab. His lawyers also allege Gazzaniga's "negligence, carelessness and other tortious, unlawful and wrong acts" led to the one time Super Bow l winner losing his place with the Chargers.
"The economic difference between a starting quarterback's salary and a back-up quarterback salary is at least $5,000,000 and is more than likely much greater," the lawsuit read, via The Daily Mail. "The exact amount of such past and future loss is unknown to [Taylor] at this time, and he will ask leave of this Court for permission to amend this Complaint to set forth the total amount when ascertained."
The Virginia Tech College graduate aggravated an old rib injury in just the second week of 2020 season against the Chiefs. The incident occurred whilst warming up, with Taylor later taken to hospital with breathing difficulties - and he never played another game for the LA side.
In the lawsuit, Taylor says he suffered "severe physical pain resulting in hospitalisation, physical therapy, emotional distress and other past pain and suffering." His lawyers have also accused Gazzaniga of not having "proper and accurate informed consent prior to the anaesthetic injections."
At the end of the 2020 season, Taylor signed as a starter with the Houston Texans on deal worth £10.5 million. However, again his campaign was disrupted by injury, with a hamstring problem scuppering any chance of an extension of his one-year deal.
This year, however, he headed to New York on a two-year deal worth just short of £10 million - and he's helped them to three wins from their four-pre season games.
Taylor began his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens in 2011. He's also played for the Buffalo Bills and the Cleveland Browns,
