Ex-Newcastle striker Andy Carroll admits near instant regret at signing for West Bromwich Albion

Former Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has revealed he regretted signing for West Bromwich Albion earlier this year after being there for just two days.

The ex-Magpies forward joined the Baggies in late January on a short-term deal which saw him reunited with former Newcastle boss Steve Bruce.

While Carroll was signed by Valérien Ismaël, the Frenchman was sacked just five days after the striker's arrival at the Hawthorns, with Bruce appointed the day after his dismissal.

It could be that part of Carroll's regret stems from the atmosphere around West Brom at the time, which saw Ismaël sacked despite having the Baggies in fifth place.

Speaking to BerkshireLive, Carroll said: "To be honest, the second day I was there [at West Brom] I regretted being there."

But while West Brom's board hoped the appointment of Bruce would allow them to push towards promotion back to the Premier League, it instead had the exact opposite effect.

The Baggies finished last season in 10th place, eight points off sixth placed Luton Town. So bad was West Brom's form in 2022, it saw Bruce get axed after just eight months in charge, with the club sitting 22nd in the Championship when he departed.

Carroll is now playing for Reading, who he joined on a short-term deal prior to his West Brom spell after he was released by Newcastle back in the summer of 2021.

The Geordie-born striker returned to Tyneside on a free back in 2019 but failed to have a real impact in his second spell at the club, scoring just once in 43 appearances.

And while his deal with Reading this season is again a short-term one, which is set to end in January, Carroll hopes he will be offered an extension in the coming weeks.

"Hopefully you guys have asked the gaffer [Reading boss Paul Ince] and he has given you the answer," Carroll added when asked about his future. "But I am willing to sign if there is a deal there."
