Ex-Newcastle forward Joselu emulates Samuel Eto’o with Real Madrid heroics

Joselu has equalled Samuel Eto'o and Francisco Javier Marcet's record for the most goals scored against Real Madrid by a former player.

The ex-Newcastle United striker opened the scoring for Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu with his eighth goal against his former employers. Goals from Vinicius Junior, Eder Militao and Marco Asensio ultimately saw Los Blancos come from behind to prevail 3-1 on Saturday.

The 32-year-old switched from Celta Vigo to Real Madrid in 2009 and spent the majority of his three years in the Spanish capital playing for their B team.

He scored twice in two league appearances for the first team, and then embarked on a nomadic career which took in spells in Germany, Spain, and England.

Joselu scored just seven times in 52 outings during his two seasons at Newcastle, but has undergone a remarkable transformation since returning to his native Spain.

The forward hit double figures in each of his three seasons at Alaves, and is on the verge of setting a personal record for goals scored in a single top-flight league season in his debut campaign at Espanyol.

He is just two goals shy of equalling his record of 14 goals which was set in his final year at Alaves. Joselu has netted 12 goals in 22 La Liga outings so far this term - averaging an impressive 0.56 goals per 90.
