Ex-Netherlands international says Barcelona are 'blackmailing' Frenkie de Jong and tells him to join Man United

A former Netherlands international has accused Barcelona of blackmailing Frenkie de Jong and has urged the midfielder to join Manchester United if the La Liga giants continue to 'harass' him.

Earlier this week, MEN Sport revealed that United are still chasing De Jong as they have deemed alternatives to be not on the same level as the Barca man. However, United officials are growing frustrated having agreed a deal with the La Liga club only for the situation regarding De Jong's deferral of wages to halt any progress.

United have singled De Jong out as their main transfer target this summer and have had a fee agreed with the Catalan club since June. Former PSV Eindhoven goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus has called on De Jong to leave Spain and join United for the good of his career.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad, Waterreus said: "I can no longer hear the slogan 'Més Que Un Club' (more than a club). Barcelona are a commercial monstrosity, in my eyes it symbolises everything that makes modern football so ugly.

"The way in which they are now blackmailing Frenkie is a striking example of this. I hope he keeps his footing and stays unless they harass him more and he smashes his own windows for the World Cup. Then he better go to United, where he’s wanted anyway."
