Ex-Manchester United star tells Erik ten Hag who to sign in January to solve striker problem

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker believes the Reds should explore the possibility of signing Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to try and increase their attacking output.

United, who will be looking to end 2022 on a high when they travel to Molineux to face Wolves on Saturday, are the lowest scorers currently camped inside the Premier League's top seven, scoring just 23 goals so far this season. Their 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday evening gave them a healthier-looking goal difference of plus three, but it still requires a lot more improvement.

Reds boss Erik ten Hag has already confirmed that he wants to add a striker to his ranks in next month's transfer window, but the Manchester Evening News understands that the club are set to explore the possibility of bringing in a temporary solution on loan, with a view to sourcing someone permanent in the summer. United had set their eyes on Cody Gakpo but he has since sealed a move to Liverpool.

Atletico Madrid ace Joao Felix is being widely tipped as a possible candidate to come in on loan and strengthen United's attacking options. Fellow Portugal international Goncalo Ramos is also attracting plenty of attention, but there is next to no chance of him leaving Benfica on loan.

Therefore, with attainable options proving somewhat limited, Parker has outlined why he believes Mitrovic would be a good fit for United. The Serbian has notched 10 goals in the Premier League so far this season, making him the fourth-highest goalscorer in the division.

"I really think that Mitrovic could be a very good signing for Man United," Parker told BonusCodeBets. "When you have him on your team you can put the ball into the box at any time and he will most likely score a goal.

"He has improved discipline-wise and he really knows how to get into defenders' heads. I can really see him being an important player for Man United.

"But it's going to be expensive; Fulham love him and they will not let him go for peanuts because he is so important for them. If he is not on the pitch they have 70 per cent less chance of scoring.

"For instance, if Fulham play against Man United and he is on the pitch for Fulham, I don't believe that Man United will win that game."

Mitrovic, who missed United's 2-1 win over Fulham just prior to the World Cup with an ankle injury, has been in devastating form in front of goal since the start of last season, scoring 53 times for the Cottagers. He netted 43 goals in the Championship last season, helping them storm their way to the title.

The 28-year-old's record at Premier League level, however, despite his exploits so far this season, has never been too blistering; he has scored 34 times in 117 appearances.
