Ex-Manager of Mexican Singer Gerardo Ortiz Killed in Broad Daylight; He Is Not the First

En español

For the second time in his career, news have surfaced about the murder of a former manager of Gerardo Ortiz in Mexico. The crime occurred in broad daylight in a busy area of Mexico City.

The victim, Jesús "Chucho" Pérez Alvear, was shot at the Plaza Miyana shopping center in Polanco. According to a 2018 report from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Pérez and his talent management company, Gallística Diamante, were linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico's most active criminal organizations in drug trafficking.

Mexican media reported that Pérez was dining at El Bajío restaurant when two men disguised as food delivery workers entered and opened fire without saying a word. Witnesses stated that Pérez was shot 15 times, with 13 bullets hitting him.

Newspaper Publimetro revealed that Pérez was a former brother-in-law of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," the leader of CJNG.

Pérez was reportedly married to Berenice González, the sister of El Mencho's wife. He was also associated with other regional Mexican music artists, such as Julión Álvarez, who admitted working with him in the past after the Treasury Department's report was made public.

The incident brought back memories of the 2011 murder of another member of Ortiz's team.

Which of Gerardo Ortiz's managers have been murdered?

The first manager of the artist to lose his life was Ramiro Caro, who was also Ortiz's cousin. On August 25, 2011, Caro was killed while Ortiz narrowly escaped harm.

The two had attended a performance at a palenque in Colima and were traveling to their next destination when their vehicle was ambushed by gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles. While Ortiz emerged unscathed, Caro and the driver, Abel Valle Rosales, were killed.

The tragedy deeply affected the Mexican-American artist, who later wrote a corrido in Caro's honor. Ortiz was born in Pasadena, CA but moved to Culiacán, Sinaloa, the capital of narco violence in Mexico, when he was five years old. Three years later, at the age of eight, he released his first album and saw a rise to prominence at thirteen after he auditioned for the Televisa talent show 'Código F.A.M.A.'
