Ex-Man United defender makes Liverpool quadruple admission as 'legacy' faces fresh threat

Liverpool made Manchester United nervous last season as they closed in on the quadruple, but Jaap Stam highlighted how the Reds 'found it hard to be successful'.

The Reds would have created history if they won all four major competitions, but Manchester City won the Premier League on the final day and Liverpool lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Jurgen Klopp's side ended last term with the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, but Pep Guardiola's side could equal United in winning a famous treble.

Stam was in the United side that won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League back in 1999 and he wants to remain the only English side to have achieved that.

“You want to be the only ones in history who are doing so yes, being part of that legacy is very important for us and for the club,” Stam said to Full Circle from bet365 “Liverpool were very close last year and they found it hard to eventually be successful and they didn’t make it.

“United have shown in the Carabao Cup and in the semi-final of the FA Cup against Brighton as well they can play these games. They have shown they approach these games in a way that makes them tough to beat.

“Not always dominant or creating a lot but tough to beat and able to take the opportunity with the quality or experience to win in that way.”
