Ex-Leeds United boss issues worrying 'fitness' claim after Liverpool mauling

Former Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn is concerned by how much "fitter" Liverpool looked than Javi Gracia's side during their 6-1 defeat on Monday night.

Liverpool ruthlessly punished Leeds' fragile defence to score six at Elland Road for the first time in history. Leeds headed into the game reeling from a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace, and had clearly not recovered from such a comprehensive mauling when Liverpool arrived in West Yorkshire.

Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota both hit doubles, while Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez scored the first and last goals of their rout.

Leeds have leaked 11 goals across their last two matches, including eight in the second half, and now have the worst defensive record in the Premier League (60 goals conceded).

While Leeds' defensively fragility is clear for all too see, Redfearn has highlighted how Liverpool looked physically more efficient in every department.

“The worrying thing for me is that I thought they [Liverpool] looked a lot fitter. You’ll be able to see the stats on the distances covered and high-intensity runs, but they just looked quicker," told BBC Radio Leeds.

“The other thing, when the two [Roca and McKennie] have sort of screened the front in other games, which has worked, they screen the front but they don’t really pick anybody up.

“So that’s two out of your eleven, so you’ve got nine trying to get up against people and regain possession.”
