Ex-Glentoran teen Matthew Carson making his mark at Southampton

Former Glentoran youngster Matthew Carson has been tipped for a bright future in football after penning a new contract with Southampton.

The 18-year-old joined the Saints in the summer of 2020 and has featured for the club's Under 18 and 23 sides over the past two years.

Carson's performances recently earned the teenager a new one-year deal with the Premier League club. And for Southampton's Northern Ireland scout Neil Kelly, the extension is well deserved.

"Matty has been doing really well and played quite a few U23 games last season as well. He also featured for the club's Under 18s who won their regional league title before losing out to Manchester City in the National Premier League final.

"But Southampton did really well and Matty played a big part in their success. He has really progressed over the past two years.

"He hit the ground running when he arrived at Southampton and last season he played for the Under 18s and then about 12 games for the U23s. He is so versatile and can play along the back. he is very highly thought of at the club.

"It is difficult for any kid in full-time football, but one thing Matty has is dedication and he is hungry to become a footballer. He should definitely get a career out of it because he has the talent and attitude to go far.

"I chat to Matty quite a bit and he has a very good temperament. Even when he is home he is out training or working on aspects of his game that need improved on."

Kelly believes Carson's work ethic has been a key to the youngster's ongoing success. Even during the off-season the young defender is constantly looking at ways to improve his game.

"He works by himself and goes to specialised coaches. It could be conditioning or working on his speed and explosiveness," Kelly added.

"He never stops, and recently he was away with the Northern Ireland Under 19s for the games against Malta. I don't think he has had much time off.

"Last year he had about six weeks off during the summer, while this year he only got three. But that's what happens when you're doing well.

"If you are successful you get less of a break. And he is busting to get back as well.

"He is doing well and progressing nicely. He is a good lad and he has everything a young player needs to be a success."
