PSG star Sergio Rico in intensive care with head injury after falling from horse

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico is in intensive care following a horse riding incident in his native Spain on Sunday morning.

PSG have confirmed the 29-year-old is in an intensive care unit (ICU) at a hospital in Seville. The French champions are in "constant contact" with the former Fulham star's family and have sent their "full support". The extent of his injuries remain unclear.

"He is in a serious condition," a PSG spokesperson told BBC News on Sunday.

PSG have tweeted: "Paris Saint-Germain learned of the accident of their player Sergio Rico this Sunday and remain in constant contact with those close to them. The entire Rouge et Bleu community gives them their full support."

As per reports in Spain and France, Rico was riding a horse in Huelva when a runaway horse collided with him. It's claimed he was taken to the hospital by helicopter and has suffered a head trauma.

It's believed Rico travelled to Spain after PSG clinched the Ligue 1 title on Saturday night with a 1-1 draw at Strasbourg, with Lionel Messi scoring for the visitors. Rico, who was on the bench for that game, was given some time off by PSG boss Christophe Galtier.

Born in Seville, Rico started his career at his boyhood club before graduating to the first team in 2014. He went on to play 170 times for Sevilla before joining Fulham on a season-long loan in August 2018, shortly after their promotion to the Premier League.

Rico played 32 times for Fulham during that season, as they were relegated to the Championship. He then joined PSG, initially on loan, in September 2019 and has since won three Ligue 1 titles, two French Cups, the French League Cup and the French Super Cup.

Rico has spent most of his time at PSG on the bench, failing to make an appearance this season. The two-time Europa League winner joined Mallorca on a six-month loan deal in January 2022, helping them survive in LaLiga for another campaign.

"Lots of strength and speedy recovery, Sergio Rico," tweeted Sevilla, while Ligue 1's official Twitter account wrote: "All our thoughts are with Sergio Rico." Fulham have also shown their support, tweeting: "We're all with you, Rico."

PSG's triumph on Saturday night mean they have now won nine of the last 11 Ligue 1 titles. Galtier told reporters: "This afternoon I watched the last day of the season in the Bundesliga and you can see that it is very difficult to win the league, any league.

"The reigning champions in all European leagues have often had problems this season, so we appreciate what this means. It is a title and we must not believe it is normal to win, even if we are Paris Saint-Germain."
