Chelsea need Cody Gakpo 'more' amid Newcastle United links

Glen Johnson has claimed that Chelsea should join the race to sign the in-demand PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo has attracted mass interest in recent months, with Newcastle United being one of a number of clubs who have had the Dutchman on their radar for quite some time.

While the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool have also been heavily linked with Gakpo, Chelsea have largely remained out of the picture.

But after a slow start to the season under Thomas Tuchel, and now Graham Potter, Johnson believes that Gakpo is exactly the type of player that Chelsea need.

"Cody Gakpo has really caught my eye at the World Cup. It's not easy to score at this level, also the way he reads the game, the way he plays and moves, he looks the real deal," the former Chelsea full-back told FairBettingSites.

"In terms of personnel, Chelsea need Gakpo more than Liverpool. Chelsea have always had fantastic wingers, but they never scored goals, if you don't get in those positions to score goals there's not much point in you being in the team.

"Gakpo looks like he could do it in the Premier League, he looks like he would burst onto the scene like Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz has for Liverpool."

Gakpo has already notched 13 goals and 17 assists for PSV in all competitions, and has translated his stellar club form onto the international stage.

The 23-year-old has scored three goals in as many games in Qatar to help propel the Netherlands into the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup.
