Ex-England man makes Jude Bellingham transfer comparison about Newcastle target James Maddison

James Maddison is not the only England star with speculation mounting about his future during the final round of international fixtures of the season.

Maddison is wanted by both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur while skipper Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Declan Rice are the subject of strong interest.

The quartet played key roles in England's convincing 4-0 win over Malta on Friday night, with Toon target Maddison playing 70 minutes of the Group C clash.

Ex-West Ham star Jermain Defoe believes the players will not find it too difficult to park their club futures while part of Gareth Southgate's Three Lions' setup.

"You have to be professional," Defoe said on Channel 4. "I think everyone has been in that situation before, I think it is a case of coming here and focusing on international football and getting the job done.

"Sometimes it is not always easy, it’s easy to say you just have to focus on England but naturally, you are going to think about your future. It’s important to keep your head down, focus on your football and get the job done."

Defoe's comments were backed up by ex-England midfielder Joe Cole, who admits that while Maddison will have numerous options this season, he'll be able to park that until later in the summer.

"The word professional comes to mind, they are professional footballers," said Cole. "Some of these players will have their heads turned - we have just seen Jude Bellingham become one of the biggest summer signings so far and Maddison, he will have his options open but it’s just a case of coming here, professional footballers get to a level because they can compartmentalise."
