Ex-England cricketer Steve James heartbroken as daughter, 21, dies of suspected sepsis

The daughter of former England cricketer Steve James has tragically died of suspected sepsis at the age of just 21.

Bethan James, who was studying at the University of South Wales, passed away over the weekend following a spell of bad health, leaving behind her parents and brother Rhys.

Her father was captain of Glamorgan County Cricket Club between 2000-2003 and also played two Tests for England in 1998 before becoming a journalist for The Telegraph and The Times, and he and his wife Jane posted an emotional tribute to their daughter on social media.

"We have the most indescribably devastating news that our beautiful daughter Bethan suddenly passed away on Saturday evening," the post read. "Our hearts are broken. She was the most wonderfully caring and kind daughter and sister to Rhys."

James was away covering a Six Nations match in Ireland when Bethan was taken ill, and it is believed his journey back was delayed by poor weather and she died before he got home.

Bethan had battled illness before, having undergone a bowel operation at a young age, and she was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease last year.

A number of high-profile sporting figures offered their condolences on social media, with former rugby player Brian Moore tweeting: "So sorry Steve; nothing will be of comfort but thoughts with you all." while referee Nigel Owens wrote: "My sincere and deepest sympathy to you all as family and friends. God bless."

Sepsis is a condition caused by the body's response to an infection, and it can often be life-threatening.

Bethan, who wrote in a blog, told followers last year: "I can't tell you how excited I am for 2020!! I have a feeling it's going to be the craziest year of my life and hopefully the best too!!

"Can't wait to get started, going to be starting the year off in an extremely good place with the best people around me."
