Former Boots employee's top tips for shopping the 70% off sale as it hits stores today

The huge Boots post-Christmas sale usually sees the price of festive gifts slashed by 70 per cent at the end of January.

However, shoppers have been waiting for an announcement from the retailer for weeks on when the sale will launch.

The health and beauty company revealed its post-Christmas sale has hit stores today (March 14), with remaining Christmas stock reduced by more than two thirds.

Boots often keep the date of their January sale under wraps, with no big announcements or advertisements - but in previous years, it’s often been launched the third or fourth week of the month.

It typically launches on a Friday, and in previous years, has been on the following dates:

  • 2017 - January 20

  • 2018 - January 19

  • 2019 - February 1

  • 2020 - January 31

Due to the pandemic, the 2021 sale was cancelled and replaced with a ‘pay day’ sale, and the 70% off sale launched three months later in April when lockdown restrictions were lifted.

The Boots January 2022 sale was predicted to launch on Friday, January 28 in line with previous years, but it's gone live this week - around six weeks later than usual.

The highly anticipated sale includes brands such as No7, Jack Wills and FCUK, as well as selected fragrance gift sets.

When I worked at Boots as a university student, December and January were by far the most exciting months - and we would always get a heads up on the sales.

One of my favourite things was putting together the Christmas build, which was as early as September, where store assistants would clear the shelves of suncream and replace them with glittering gifts from No7, Ted Baker and Soap and Glory.

It was here my festive sale planning really started. You can usually tell which gifts will sell out before Christmas, as well as which are likely to be left over on Boxing Day and beyond.

Naturally, the best part about working on Boxing Day was getting first dibs on sale items, but it’s a little known fact that eager shoppers can bag 50% off online on Christmas day, swooping in on the deals while everyone else unwraps their gifts.

But if you've waited all this time to shop the 70 per cent off sale, here are my top tips as an ex-employee.

Top tips for shopping the Boots 70% off sale:

  • Check your local stores opening times - opening hours differ from store to store, so be sure to know what time yours opens so you can arrive in plenty of time

  • Get there early - in larger stores, queues can form outside the store ahead of the doors opening

  • Visit in advance - visit your selected store a week or so in advance to scout out where products are displayed so you know where to head on the day

  • Know what you want - have an idea of what you want in your mind so you don’t waste time browsing the aisles

  • Calculate costs in advance - if you know what you want, you’ll be able to work out 70% of the green sticker price ahead of checking out at the tills. This will avoid any surprises at the checkout because you filled your basket without considering the total

  • Sign up for an advantage card - the Boots advantage card offers four points for every £1 spent, which means that you can earn dozens of points during the sale which you can spend later in the year. Sign up for an advantage card here.

And tomorrow will see the return of the retailers £10 Tuesday offer, which sees dozens of products reduced to a tenner.

One product included last week was the No7 Midnight Glow Eye and Face Palette, which usually retails at £35, alongside a selection of No7 bundles.

The Makeup Obsession ‘Be Obsessed’ eyeshadow palette vault is usually reduced from £30 to £10. Beauty buffs can bag four eyeshadow palettes, a highlighter palette, blush palette and a set of makeup brushes for a snip of the price.
