A sheriff has postponed sentencing an ex-employee of Perth -based insurance giant Aviva who embezzled over £13,000 to give her time to repay the amount.
Joy Pumayi admitted last year misappropriating the sum while she worked for Aviva as a household claims handler and appeared at Perth Sheriff Court last Wednesday for sentencing.
The court heard Pumayi (28), of Airthrey Avenue, Bridge of Allan, would make fake claims for cash using real customers details and then pay the amounts into her own bank account.
Fiscal depute Elizabeth Hodgson said Pumayi initially made fake claims under the sum of £2500 as she was able to approve these without authorisation from any other member of staff.
Ms Hodgson said Pumayi initially transferred amounts ranging from just £600 to just under £2500 claiming customers were using the cash to fix water damaged goods or carry out remedial works to their properties.
However she said Pumayi then went on to make a much larger claim of around £7400 which required clearance from a colleague and aroused suspicion leading to an internal investigation.
Ms Hodgson said Pumayi confessed to her crime during the internal probe and was later reported to the police and sacked for gross misconduct.
Last year in court Pumayi admitted embezzling a total of £13,017.03 from Aviva between January 4, 2017 and August 4, 2017.
Sheriff Richard McFarlane was told on Wednesday Pumayi was in a position to repay the full amount to her erstwhile employer. He opted to defer sentencing Pumayi until February 23 to let her make the repayment.
