Ex-Emmerdale star Gemma Oaten in hospital after 'scary day' of tests

Former Emmerdale actor Gemma Oaten has been in hospital with Covid and a kidney problem.

Gemma, who played Rachel Breckle in the ITV soap between 2011 and 2015, admitted to having a "scary day" after falling ill with the virus about a week ago. The Viking Radio presenter, from Hull, complained of feeling "rubbish" on Monday and "even worse" on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old, who has also appeared on BBC Doctors and Casualty, soldiered on presenting her breakfast show for the following two days.

But yesterday night she tweeted from hospital: "In hospital and in safe hands. Scary day. Signing off for sleep after more tests. Much love."

While Gemma had coronavirus when she was hospitalised, her admission was for a kidney problem. Gemma has said she has been "so poorly I don't whether to laugh or cry".

She tweeted to fans: "Hopefully I'll be able to go home in a few days. I have Covid but this is actually to do with my kidneys being in distress. Really scary but the NHS services have been a lifeline for me today. So poorly and stress hasn't helped but will fight back...

"I'm so poorly I don't know whether to laugh or cry so I keep doing both. In a ward now with hands-on care, drips galore and constant monitoring. Dozing off soon after morphine."

Fellow radio presenter and TV presenter Gaby Roslin was among the dozens of wellwishers.

Gaby tweeted: "Wish you a speedy recovery my sweet. Take good care of yourself and sending love."
