Ex-Drogheda captain James Brown signs new contract with Blackburn Rovers

Former Drogheda United captain James Brown has signed a new contract with Blackburn Rovers after impressing on an initial short-term deal.

The former Shelbourne full-back has signed a deal until the summer of 2024 after making a quick breakthrough to the club’s first-team bench.

Brown, 24, has been a sub for the Championship games with Hull City and West Bromwich Albion as well as impressing with Mike Sheron’s under-23 Premier League 2 side.

The Dubliner starred in wins over Leeds United and Brighton & Hove Albion for the under-23s and draws against Liverpool and Tottenham Hostpur.

And he’s set his eyes on a regular first-team place after signing a two-and-a-year half deal with the promotion-chasing Ewood Park club.

He said: “When I first signed, the gaffer was really honest with me and said I was here to try and earn a new contract.

“Some people don't always like that honesty as it mighn’t always be nice, but he had chats with me and, looking back, he was right.

“He said it would be best if I signed what I signed at the time as he wanted to see if I could fit in. I think I have done that. He asked me to work hard for a new contract and I’m thankful for that.

“I was a bit tense and nervous coming over at first, and I realised I had to settle down. But being here every day, mixing it with the lads, it just feels normal now.”
