Ex-Celtic ace Lewis Morgan desperate for Scotland recall and reveals 'disappointment' at missing out

Lewis Morgan admits he is desperate to force his way back into the Scotland set-up.

The former Celtic and St Mirren star - now starring in the MLS with New York Red Bulls - has been capped twice so far in his career.

He would love nothing more than to be a part of Steve Clarke's squad and says playing a lot of football at wing-back in the US lends itself well to the way the national team set-up.

Morgan has revealed he is 'disappointed' to miss out on the squad this time around but will always be supporting the team regardless if he is selected or not.

The 25-year-old has made a stunning start to the MLS campaign with seven goals in just 15 games - including a goal of the season contender in the big win over DC United last time out - and he is determined to keep performing and force his way back into the fold.

Asked if he will be tuning in to the big Hampden showdown, he exclusively told Glasgow Live Sport: "Yeah absolutely. I am obviously desperate to try and get back in the international fold.

"I think I have played quite a lot of football out here at wing-back, especially last year, and I think that lends itself quite well to the national team.

"I am always going to support the team regardless if I am included or not.

"We saw what the Euro qualification did for the whole nation. It lifted everyone and hopefully the boys can do that again on an even bigger stage."

Asked if Clarke had been in touch recently over the international team, he added: "Not so much. I think that sort of goes above my head.

"Maybe the managers have had contact with each other, but not recently.

"Like I say I am disappointed not to be involved. I think my form has been pretty good and obviously playing at wing-back it is a position that Scotland use.

"I have just got to focus on myself and keep performing and try and put myself back in the plans, but all the while wish all the players who did get called-up all the success and hopefully they can get us to another major tournament.

"With Scotland we have always been pessimistic and I think this team has sort of changed that.

"The nation has become much more optimistic and we do have a great team. There is no reason why we can't do that.

"It is going to be two tough games but we have shown in the past that with the qualifying route we took to the Euros through the Nations League and going to the likes of Serbia that the boys can stand up to the occasion and hopefully they can do that again."

Should Scotland overcome Ukraine and then Wales in Cardiff, they will qualify for the finals later this year.

England, USA and Iran await in Group B for the winner of the play-off route.

Clarke and Co went up against the Auld Enemy at the Euros and the rivals will face off one again in Qatar if Scotland make it - a game which will add extra hype for both players and the Tartan Army.

The USA would be another big game for Morgan due to plying his trade in the MLS.

And the ex-Celtic and St Mirren star is in no doubt the national team can compete at the pinnacle of international football.

He said: "Obviously I am going to be supporting Scotland regardless but it kind of adds another element to it whenever Scotland plays England.

"Even the US, it would be good to test ourselves at that level. We are more than capable.

"It is so tough to get through qualifying. If we manage to do that, and hopefully we will, then the boys will deserve all the credit."
