A former Catholic brother will stand trial on a child sexual charge allegedly committed while teaching at a Queensland school more than 30 years ago.

Frank Terrence Keating, 80, on Monday appeared at a Brisbane committal hearing via video link charged with one count of carnal knowledge of a child.

Prosecutors allege Keating committed the offence while teaching at the school - where he was known as Brother Ibar - in 1989.

He was committed to stand trial in Brisbane District Court at a date to be fixed after evidence was given in a closed court on Monday.

Keating - who appeared via video link from Victoria at Brisbane Magistrates Court hearing - is on strict bail conditions.

He did not enter a plea.
