Ex-Bristol Rovers midfielder reunited with Tommy Widdrington in transfer hailed as a 'real coup'

Former Bristol Rovers midfielder Cam Hargreaves has been reunited with ex-Gas director of football Tommy Widdrington after signing a one-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months, for National League North side Kings Lynn Town.

Hargreaves was released by Rovers earlier this summer after five years with the club but has spent the second half of last season with the Linnets, making 19 appearances as they were relegated from the National League.

Widdrington has now secured the 23-year-old on a permanent deal, hailing it as a "real coup" while also drawing a slight cryptic reference to his departure at Rovers.

Hargreaves, the son of former academy manager and now Yeovil boss Chris, broke into the Rovers team under Graham Coughlan and was a regular squad member throughout the 2020/21 season before being made surplus to requirements by Joey Barton.

“I know fans get frustrated during quiet periods, but there was work going on behind the scenes,” Widdrington said. “It was purely a case of lining up players, agents and staff holidays in order to get agreements and paperwork sorted. We are delighted that Cameron Hargreaves has agreed a one-year deal with the club with a further one-year option.

“I genuinely believe it’s a real coup for us to achieve this as Cameron would have had plenty of suitors, having simply been a casualty of mass changes in policy at his previous club.”

Hargreaves is not the only former Rovers player now in place at Kings Lynn with Widdrington also bringing in son Theo having taken up an option in the three-month contract he signed at the end of last season.

Theo Widdrington was at Rovers from 2018-2020 and has since played for non-league Lewes and Havant & Waterloovile. Fellow midfielders Josh Barrett and Zain Walker are also part of Widdrington’s squad in Norfolk.

“Theo played his part in what I feel was a very good team effort over the last 3 months of a very difficult campaign,” Tommy Widdrington added. “He’s now moved to the area and is 'all in' having signed a permanent deal. Whilst he has the same surname as I do, I can assure anyone reading this, that he is here, purely on merit, despite that and not because of it.”
