Ex-Bolton Wanderers defender Gretar Steinsson to join Spurs for new role after Everton exit

Retired Bolton Wanderers defender Gretar Steinsson has moved to Tottenham Hotspur to take on a new backroom role, according to reports.

The 40-year-old joined Wanderers in 2008 from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar. He went on to make 138 appearances for the club and scored six goals.

The defender departed the club in the summer of 2012 after he was not offered fresh terms. It coincided with the club being relegated from the Premier League.

The former Icelandic international went on to play for a further season with Turkish side Kayserispor. He departed the club by mutual consent in the summer of 2013 and retired from playing not long after.

Since then, the ex-defender has held positions off the pitch at football clubs. He first joined AZ again in January 2015, but not long after that was back in English football.

Steinsson became technical director at Fleetwood Town and spent more than three years with the Cod Army. He joined Premier League side Everton as the club's head of recruitment and development.

The Athletic now reports that Steinsson has joined Antonio Conte's Spurs as a performance director. He departed fellow Premier League side Everton last December.

It is reported that the former Wanderers defender will work across both youth and senior levels at the club. He is anticipated to work closely with the North London club's managing director of football, Fabio Paratici.
