Ex-Armagh star Aaron Kernan "certain" suspensions will follow ugly scenes

Former Armagh star Aaron Kernan is “certain” that suspensions are imminent for last weekend’s warring Orchard County and Donegal players.

Armagh and Donegal will meet again on April 24 in the Ulster SFC in Ballybofey and Kernan said that after the tempestuous ending to last Sunday’s round 7 league game in Letterkenny: “I’d be very surprised if both teams turn up with full hands to pick from.”

Former Young Player of the Year Kernan was speaking with ex-Donegal star Brendan Devenney on Highland radio’s DL Debate programme in the wake of Donegal’s 1-14 to 1-13 win over Armagh.

Kernan said of punishment: “I’m certain someone is going to get it. It’s just who? That’s what the nervous wait is going to be all week. I think both counties just need to prepare themselves that there will be something and they just have to deal with it in due course.”

Five players were shown red in mid-February when tempers boiled over between Armagh and Tyrone, four of those dismissals going the way of the red Hands.

on the latest flashpoint involving his county, Kernan noted an inevitable ‘clamour for action’ from social media users as well as the potential influence of rTe TV’s Allianz League Sunday programme which highlighted the fracas.

The Crossmaglen man said: “With social media, it’s just the way it is these days, there’s a big push and a clamour for action to be taken and obviously the League on Sunday highlighting it wouldn’t help the situation.

“To be honest with you, it’s probably going to be a nervous week for both counties. It’s not great to look at, let’s call it, but it happens.

“In terms of was anyone really going to get hurt?

“Or was there anything dangerous happening? Probably not. But I just would fear that after the Armagh/ Tyrone game and how severely Tyrone were dealt with at that stage, I’d be very surprised if both teams turn up with full hands to pick from in Ballybofey in a few weeks’ time.”
