Ex-Aberdeen and Motherwell boss appointed new Dundee manager

Dundee have confirmed the appointment of Mark McGhee as their new manager until the end of the season.

The former Motherwell and Aberdeen boss is back in Scottish football, five years after leaving the Steelmen, and he will be assisted by Simon Rusk and Dave Mackay.

McGhee replaces James McPake, who was sacked yesterday with the Dens Park club one point off the bottom of the Premiership.

The 64-year-old, who was infamously caught on video having a foul-mouthed pop at a fan after being sent off during a 7-2 defeat for Motherwell at Aberdeen in 2017, had two spells at Fir Park, as well as being in charge of the Dons themselves between 2009-10.

He also served on the Scotland coaching setup during Gordon Strachan's reign. Strachan is currently technical director at Dens Park.

A club statement read: "Dundee Football Club are delighted to announce that Mark McGhee has today been appointed manager of the club.

"He arrives at the club with Simon Rusk who will join Dave Mackay is assisting Mark.

"Vastly experienced in management Mark’s first role was with Reading back in 1991 following a successful playing career that saw him turn out for Newcastle United, Aberdeen, and Celtic amongst others.

"He moved in management to Leicester City then onto Wolverhampton Wanderers, Millwall and Brighton and Hove Albion before heading north of the border.

"In 2007, he joined Motherwell for his first spell in charge at Fir Park. A spell at Aberdeen was followed by one at Bristol Rovers and an appointment as Scotland assistant under Gordon Strachan.

"He returned to Motherwell in 2015 and went on to manage Barnet two years later.

"His last role saw him take up the position of assistant manager at Stockport County, working under Simon.

"Simon’s playing career saw him play for Boston United, York City, and Crawley Town and he moved into management with Brighton Under 23s in 2015.

"After six years with the club, he made the move into first-team management with Stockport where he worked with Mark.

"A third-place finish in the National League and defeat in the promotion play-off saw them fall just short of promotion and they left their roles in October of last year.

"Mark and Simon have joined the club on deals until the end of the season."

McGhee's first game at the helm will be on Sunday at Celtic Park against Celtic.

However, McGhee was given a six-game touchline ban for his aforementioned exchange with an Aberdeen supporter, as well as the officials, and did not serve it after being relieved of his duties at Fir Park before the ban was handed out.

It means he is not expected to be in the dugout until March 20 when Dundee host Rangers in the Premiership. Dundee travel to McGhee's old side Motherwell on March 5 for a Premiership clash.
