Ewing's wait goes on, another lay day at Bells Beach

Australia's Ethan Ewing will likely have to wait until Tuesday to continue his surfing world title quest at the Rip Curl Pro after a second-straight lay day was called at Bells Beach.

Organisers of the World Surf League Championship Tour event ruled out resuming the men's opening round on Sunday due to small, slow waves and said the next call on the conditions would be made on Monday morning.

But Tuesday seems the most likely option to resume.

"Tomorrow, there is still a very small chance of running heats, with some models showing a small bump in the swell, but there is also a big tide and possibility for onshore winds," said WSL deputy commissioner Renato Hickel on Sunday.

"We can see Tuesday and Wednesday have solid surf coming, so there is a good opportunity for competition to recommence then."

Sitting second in the standings behind Brazil's Italo Ferreira, Ewing is waiting to begin his Bells Beach campaign in a first-round heat against countryman Morgan Cibilic and Hawaii's Seth Moniz.

Ferreira will be up against Australian Xavier Huxtable and Morocco's Ramzi Boukhiam.

The other Australian men awaiting opening heats are Jack Robinson, Ryan Callinan, Joel Vaughan and Liam O'Brien.

The first round of the women's event was held on Friday with Australia's two-time Bells Beach champion Tyler Wright and fellow Australians Molly Picklum, El Salvador runner-up Isabella Nichols and Sally Fitzgibbons among those to progress.
