Ewan McGregor set to reprise role of legendary Star Wars character in Disney+ series

Ewan McGregor is returning to the Star Wars universe later this year as Disney have confirmed the release date for their Obi Wan Kenobi series.

Much of the series is still unknown, but McGregor, 50, is set to reunite with his Star Wars co-star Hayden Christensen, known for his role as Anakin Skywalker.

Ewan, originally from Perth, wrapped filming on the big Star Wars project last September and has dropped little clues here and there since, getting fans excited for the release date.

The Scots actor is returning to the Star Wars franchise after 17 years, having last played the iconic character in the 2005 Revenge of The Sixth film.

The official synopsis for Obi-Wan Kenobi sees the story set 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, when Obi-Wan witnessed Anakin turn to the dark side, forgoing the ways of the Jedi and becoming the most notorious Sith Lord in the galaxy.

Speaking to Forbes, Ewan said that he was "not going to give away anything else about the storyline" with Hayden, before adding cryptically: "I think it’s really going to satisfy Star Wars fans."

He continued: "I always felt there was a story between Episode III where I finished playing Obi-Wan in the movies and Episode IV where Alec Guinness is Obi-Wan Kenobi.

"The [Obi-Wan Kenobi series] writers and Deb and I and everyone, I think we crafted or they crafted a very fine storyline. I think people are going to like it."

"We finished shooting our series, and it was really, really good fun – I really enjoyed working with [director] Deborah Chow," he said.

.

"I think it will not disappoint," he added. "I think it's gonna be good. I had a really good time making it, and worked with some really wonderful people, lovely people.

"The new technology we employed doing it is cool, and it was a different experience than making the original three films that I did."

There could be some surprises in store as well as McGregor dropped a big hint in conversation with chat show host Jimmy Kimmel.

"I got to play a very special scene on May 4th with someone very special in my life, and that's all I can tell you about it," he said in an interview from earlier this year.

The project has been in development for a while now, before reaching our screens at home in May this year but in August 2020, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy told The Wrap : "It’s been very exciting to see the talent that’s come in.

"And we’re now developing the limited Obi-Wan Kenobi series with Deborah Chow, and she’s just been doing a phenomenal job."

Obi-Wan Kenobi will be released on Disney Plus on 25th May 2022.
