Everything you need to know about the new look Southport Market

Southport Market is in the process of a wide-scale refurbishment that will see Market Street get a new lease of life.

The market has seen a massive decline in business over the years with units being vacated and never filled.

This summer sees the grand reopening of the market after a £1.4m cash injection from Sefton Council and Liverpool City Region as part of their Covid recovery plan.

The boost includes £900,000 funding from the Southport Town Deal and £500,000 from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

The market is an early part of the town's regeneration plan with new images recently released showing an artist's interpretation of the new Marine Lakeside.

What will be in the market?

The market is set to have 10 food venues with a bespoke bar running down the middle.

Eight of the food venues have already been announced ranging from Greek to American burgers.

The venues that have been announced are 600 degrees (Pizzas, Italian), Hector's Mexicana (Mexican street food), Down and Out (Canadian steaks, poutine, hot sandwiches), King St. Bakery (Portuguese tarts), Messy Moments (Desserts), Birkdale Pie & Mash (Assorted pies), Allotment – (American Burgers et al) and Pitamu (Greek & Mediterranean).

Along with the food venues, Blackhurst Butchers will be homed in the market - a longstanding member of the market for almost 50 years.

When does it open?

There is yet to be a set date, although it is expected to be in the coming weeks. The market is being tipped to be a great new addition to the hospitality sector with many local businesses getting involved.

The market hopes to be open for the majority of the summer to welcome both locals and tourists into the new food and drink hub.

The new look market is also looking to bring history to the people of Southport, with The Atkinson being closely involved with the opening.

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Labour Cabinet Member for Regeneration & Skills, said: "It is incredible to see all our hard work nearing completion and I cannot wait to see the Market open for everyone to enjoy.

"Southport Market is an iconic location and one of considerable historic importance to the resor, which is why we have ensured the space is brimming with local touches and influences.

"Our amazing tourism team have been hard at work with The Atkinson to source old images of Southport to be used throughout the market, as well as local sign writer Graham Booth to design some of the internal signage."

Will there be any events?

Yes! The market has already planned for an outdoor market in the market quarter of the town where stalls will set up around Southport Market on the first Sunday of every month.

The outdoor market will be called Makers Market.

The market will feature a mix of artisan craft and food stalls, with Market Street becoming pedestrianised for the day.

Southport Market will also have an events space inside with the hope of having comedy nights and live music.

The market is looking to invite people of all ages and involve the people of Southport.

What will it look like?

The market is aiming for a modern design but with a nod to Southport's seaside heritage.

The market has already taken shape, with a bright aesthetic and inviting features.

The market will have the bespoke bar running through the middle with seating set out around it. The food stalls will occupy the outer parts of the market with a wide range of places to eat.

The market looks like it will be bringing something never seen before to Southport.
