Everything we learned about the three new Star Wars movies on the way

It’s been a big morning for Star Wars fans as Lucasfilm dropped a whole slew of announcements about everyone’s favorite magic space knight franchise. We got our first look at some new footage from the upcoming Ahsoka series coming this August, as well as some new footage of the upcoming shows Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte (sadly, that footage was exclusively for attendees of the Star Wars Celebration event).

But the big headline of the day undoubtedly comes from the announcement of the return of Star Wars to the big screen with three new theatrically-released films being announced. Here’s everything we know about the three new Star Wars movies on the way.

Daisy Ridley returns as Rey

We knew already that director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy had been hired to helm an upcoming Star Wars film but that was all we knew…until today. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced that Obaid-Chinoy’s film will feature Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey. Set 15 years after the events of Rise of Skywalker, the film will show Rey rebuilding the Jedi order and founding a new academy to train young Jedi.

The film will be written by Steven Knight, the man behind the acclaimed gangster series Peaky Blinders.

James Mangold explores the origins of the Jedi

James Mangold, the esteemed director of Logan, Ford v. Ferrari and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, was announced as the lead of a new film that will take us back further into the Star Wars timeline than we’ve ever seen before. Mangold’s film will explore the origins of the Jedi and show us the very first characters to wield the Force in the Star Wars universe. The film will be set 25,000 years prior to the original trilogy and is described as a “biblical epic.”

Dave Filoni brings the Disney+ threads together

The third film announced at Star Wars Celebration was the one that garnered perhaps the biggest cheers from the hardcore fans in the crowd as revered Star Wars lore master Dave Filoni was announced as its writer and director. Filoni, who has worked on nearly every Star Wars project since the Clone Wars animated series in some capacity, will be bringing the stories of the various Star Wars television series to a culmination on the big screen in a movie set just before the rise of the First Order. The film will feature characters from both The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.
