Everything we know as gardai launch murder probe after man's body found in Dublin flat

Gardai have launched a murder investigation after a man’s body was discovered at a house in Dublin on Monday evening.

Officers released a statement confirming that the male was discovered at a residence in Kevin Barry House on Coleraine Street shortly after 6:00 pm.

They confirmed that ‘all circumstances’ were being investigated, as any witnesses were asked to contact their local station.

Later it was confirmed that 28-year-old Tony Dempsey had died in an extremely violent manner, and had suffered an attack that left him with severe head injuries.

On Tuesday morning, the body of the victim was removed and brought for a post-mortem examination, but only after the State Pathologist visited the scene and conducted a preliminary examination.

As more grim realities of the incident came to light, gardaí said his body was found lying on the ground near a bed inside the flat for more than a week - meaning identification of the victim was not possible at the scene.

Locals admitted to smelling a strong odour coming from the apartment in the days leading up to Monday.

It was then revealed that the property where the man was found is owned by Dublin City Council and managed by the Peter McVerry Trust.

The trust's CEO, Pat Doyle, said the charity was saddened at the loss of a young life.

After forensic specialists examined the flat and the area around it on Tuesday, a senior investigating officer was appointed.

An incident room has also been set up and gardaí at the Bridewell continue to issue an appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.

They have interviewed a number of people and are carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area.

If you have any information in relation to this matter you can contact Bridewell Garda Station on 01 6668200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
