Everything we know about the Metro issue which has suspended trains and caused chaos for commuters

An overhead line issue on the Metro has caused chaos for commuters across the North East.

Customers have been unable to travel on trains between Monument and Brockley Whins and Monument and Jarrow on Thursday morning. This is because of 800 metres of overhead wire being down between Pelaw and Hebburn.

Nexus, which operates the Tyne and Wear Metro, said services in the area will be suspended until the wires are replaced.

Metro tickets and passes are currently being accepted on Go North East and Stagecoach bus services.

Here is everything we know about the incident so far:

What's happened on the Metro?

According to Nexus, 800 metres of overhead wire is down between Pelaw and Hebburn.

This means no trains have been able to operate between Monument and Jarrow and Monument and Brockley Whins.

Tyne and Wear Metro reported how trains were at a stand between Gateshead and Pelaw at around 6.30am this morning.

They then established that there was a problem with the overhead line.

Are both Metro lines affected?

Yes, as both train lines operate via Pelaw.

There are no trains running between Monument and Jarrow on the yellow line.

There are no trains running between Monument and Brockely Whins on the green line.

Will the issue be fixed today?

Metro staff are getting ready to carry out the repair works at site. Nexus said that works are likely to take the rest of the day.

Services will be suspended between Monument and Jarrow and Monument and Brockley Whins until the wires are replaced.

Which bus services can I use?

Metro's replacement bus services, 900 and 901, are in operation between Monument, Brockley Whins and Jarrow in both directions.

All zones single, day and season tickets can be used on Northern Rail services between Sunderland, Heworth and Central Station.

Tickets and passes were being accepted on Go North East and Stagecoach services, however that has now ended.

What has Nexus said?

Nexus have apologised to customers for the ongoing delays and disruption. They have urged people to allow extra time for their journey.

A spokesperson for Nexus said: "We can confirm that 800 metres of overhead wire is down between Pelaw and Hebburn.

"Staff are getting ready to carry out the repair works at site. Works will take the rest of the day and stretch into tomorrow, Friday 31 March.

"We are doing all we can to get the overhead line fixed as quickly as possible."
