It’s been more than two years since the first series of Russian Doll made its Netflix debut in 2019, but with filming for season two well underway, the Groundhog Day-style time loop dramedy will soon be back on our screens.
Emmy-winner and star of AMC’s new dark comedy Kevin Can F**k Himself, Annie Murphy is on board for the new series, which will hopefully answer all the questions created by the season one cliffhanger.
But who else is in the cast and what can we expect from the upcoming series? Here’s everything you need to know about Russian Doll season two.

When is the Russian Doll season 2 release date?
Russian Doll was confirmed to be returning for a second eight-episode outing back in 2019.
As it’s currently in the filming stages, Netflix has yet to announce the Russian Doll season two release date, but if you judge it by the time taken between filming and release for the first series, we can expect to see the new installment in the first half of 2022.
Who is in the Russian Doll season 2 cast?
Co-creator and lead star Natasha Lyonne will return for season two as Nadia, the chain-smoking software engineer who finds herself trapped in a time loop, forced to relive her 36th birthday party (which just happens to end in her death) on repeat.
Lyonne will be joined in season two by a whole host of new and returning faces, with Greta Lee as Nadia’s friend Maxine, Chloë Sevigny as Nadia’s mother, Lenora and Charlie Barnett as Alan Zaveri, a man also stuck in a time loop, also likely to return.
Emmy winner Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek, Kevin Can F**k Himself) has been cast in an unknown role, with Lyonne and Murphy (with a rather interesting feathered hairstyle) spotted shooting in New York City in the last week.
Carolyn Michelle Smith (House of Cards) and Sharlto Copley (District 9) have also joined the cast for season two.
What to expect from Russian Doll season 2
As fans of the Netflix time loop comedy will remember, season one ended with quite the cliffhanger, with it being left unclear as to whether Nadia and Alan are dead, in purgatory or whether the individual timelines actually spiralled out into their existences.
Although it’s been heavily teased that time-travel will feature, plot details for season two have largely been kept under wraps, but an interview with The Hollywood Reporter gives some interesting hints of what to expect from Nadia and the wider show going forward.
“I definitely have ideas that range from the really out-there anthology to staying on board with our friend Nadia,” Lyonne said.
Lyonne’s Russian Doll co-creator, Leslye Headland, also revealed that they pitched the show to Netflix as a three-season idea, so whatever happens in season two, it’s likely we can expect another big cliffhanger.
“When initially pitched, Nadia was a presence throughout all three of them. But it was not in a very conventional way, if that makes sense. She was always a presence, as we knew Lyonne would alway be the beating heart and soul of this show,” she said.
