Everything that will be cancelled or closed following Queen Elizabeth II's death

The whole country will enter a period of grieving following the sad news that Queen Elizabeth II has passed away aged 96.

The announcement was made on Thursday evening by Buckingham Palace, in a statement that read: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Many changes will be made in the coming days following the death of the Queen, and will affect every person across the UK, reports the Mirror. Read on below to find out what differences these are.

Sport

As part of the plans in place for the Queen's death, all sporting fixtures would be cancelled on the Day of National Mourning - which will be the day of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

However, it would not be uncommon to note that many football matches spanning across this weekend could also be postponed. If there are matches that do go ahead, then minute's silences will be expected to happen.

As for the matches that have already been cancelled, tomorrow's testmatch between England and South Africa in cricket has been chopped from the fixture list.

More updates will follow on which football fixtures, in both Scotland and England, will be affected.

Shops and the Economy

Given that the day of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral will be taken as a Day of National Mourning, people would expect a day off to be taken in memory.

However, employers are not instructed to give staff a day off. Unless the funeral falls on a weekend, there will be a "bank holiday" across the UK. So, most people may well get time off for the Queen's funeral.

Shops will be either closed, or reducing their opening hours. Banks will remain closed on the Day of National Mourning.

The London Stock Exchange will be closed for at least the day of the Queen's funeral and possibly for several days after - which could potentially cost the economy billions.

Theatres

Theatres across the UK are permitted to continue performing, but will be dimming lights and offering minutes silences' in respect. They will also play the national anthem, and open books of condolences prior to their plays and shows.

A statement from the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) and UK Theatre noted that they were "deeply saddened" by the news of the Queen's death.

The message, from Stephanie Sirr and Jon Gilchrist, joint Presidents of UK Theatre and Eleanor Lloyd, President of SOLT, said: "We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"The theatre industry is thankful for all the support and patronage Her Majesty has shown throughout her lifetime. We would like to convey our deepest sympathy to the Royal Family at this time of national mourning."

Television

It was reported earlier today that the BBC made some significant changes to their broadcasting schedule following the news of the Queen's health worsening.

However, after the announcement of the Queen's death, the BBC will suspend all of its programming - with coverage of the tragic news airing on BBC One.

Other channels are not required to interrupt regular scheduling, but it is thought they will to honour the monarch.

The BBC will also suspend all comedy programming during the 12-day period of national mourning. Due to the stature of such a tragic event occurring, the BBC have rehearsed the plans if the day the Queen passed ever came - so things look to be running smoothly.
