Thoughts on the performance and you know there would be penalties?
"I knew, I knew. Some of the players didn't know! But we knew. In general, I would say we played a good first half but unfortunately, only 80 metres of the pitch. The last 20 metres of the pitch were not good enough, even in the first half. We found a lot of spaces to accelerate and penetrate the box but we struggled with our decision-making and precision in the last 20 metres.
"This was simply not good enough for the effort and quality we showed in the first 80 metres of the pitch and the amount of space we had, and the number of attacks we created, there were not enough clear chances and deliveries in the last 20 metres.
"We also have to say we allowed two big chances out of nothing in the first half, otherwise I think we played a very good match in all the other aspects.
"Second half, it took us half an hour to show some quality and then it was maybe for ten minutes, so it was not good at all. Not offensively, not structure-wise, not in effort, hunger to be the dominant team. It was not good enough."
First time we’ve seen Raheem play in a Chelsea shirt, what was your assessment of how he got on and is that the front three you see as being strongest?
“I didn’t see it today. So it doesn’t matter what I have in my mind, the only thing that matters is what I see on the pitch. I saw four accelerations in the second half and they all came from Raheem.
"This is what he delivers and there is no need for major doubts or huge criticism, but it is never important what the manager has in his head before pre-season, it’s the reality that counts. Every day in training and matches like this count and from there we go.”
What did you make of Charlotte FC, were you familiar with Christian Lattanzio?
“I knew him as an assistant coach because we played against Nice when Patrick Vieira was in charge with PSG. To be very honest, It’s normal in pre-season to focus on ourselves. We presented the team very briefly this morning, we expected a narrow back four and that’s what we found. I think we had enough spaces, had enough quality in the first half to dominate and finish the game off in the first 15/20 minutes.
"If we keep on struggling to feel these things and finish these things off, it will not be the first time we get punished. If you keep an opponent alive, belief alive, the stadium alive, anything can happen. That’s why we love the game. So this is on us. I had the feeling they played with more courage, man on man in the second half, and we struggled to escape because we didn’t move enough.
"Our ball possession was not precise enough, our movement with the ball was not balanced enough to escape the pressure, so it was a pretty even game in the second half and not what we wanted."
No Timo Werner in the squad, how is he?
"Hamstring problems and we didn't take the risk."
Did you see his comments in recent days about not being completely happy and that he could be happy elsewhere?
"I'm surprised, I would be very happy as a young guy having a contract at Chelsea Football Club. I would be one of the happiest people on the planet."
He said he hasn't got the game time he perhaps wants?
"So he needs to get his game time."
How does he do that?
"Show quality, take your place and defend your place. I would be one of the happiest people on the planet having a contract with Chelsea. If he said this, I do not understand."
Is he in your plans for next season?
"Sure, he is our player, sure."
No Kepa, Cesar Azpilicueta or Ross Barkley in the squad today, what was the issue there?
"Kepa has some pain that disturbs him to feel free in his movements. Azpi had a big knock above his knee in his muscle, he ran into Edou, it was a training accident. If it was a Premier League match we would've taken the risk but the risk was too big that maybe he takes another hit and is maybe three or four days and it was not worth it.
"Ross feels his hamstrings for some days, same as Timo. The risk of having injuries, even though it's more discomfort, it's more important they stay in training than to risk it in a game and to have a longer period of injury that we don't want."
