Scots motorists are being urged to slow down after new data revealed just how many speed cameras are on the country's roads.
There are a total of 518 fixed and mobile speed cameras across the nation, according to Police Scotland data. Most are located around the densely populated central belt with the highest found in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
But findings also show that speed cameras are located on rural roads, meaning drivers could get nabbed for speeding in even the most remote of locations. If caught, motorists could be slapped with a minimum fine of £100 and three penalty points.
Findings were obtained through a Freedom of Information request by road safety campaigners Road Angel in a bid to help Scots drive safely to avoid serious accidents caused by speeding.
Glasgow has more speed cameras than any other Scottish location, with 72 across the city. Meanwhile, Edinburgh is comparatively camera free with only 34 located in the greater urban area.
There are 25 speed cameras within a few miles of the border with England, targeting those motorists who hope to speed up once entering the country. Road Angel campaigners are hoping their findings will make Scots think twice before putting their foot down.
Gary Digva, founder of Road Angel said: "Anyone thinking they can get away with speeding in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland needs to think again as the data shows they need to be aware of mobile speed cameras in even the most remote spots.
“We strongly advise all motorists across Scotland, be they native Scots or those visiting the country from other parts of the UK, to be mindful of their speed and to not exceed the legal limit.
"It can be tempting to put your foot down on open country roads but drivers should remember that a mobile speed camera may be waiting for them around the next bend."
