'Every season' - Glenn Hoddle singles out unique Liverpool star as transfer trend continues

Glenn Hoddle believes Darwin Nunez's display against Fulham is evidence he has offered Liverpool a new dimension in attack.

The 23-year-old forward has begun his Reds career brightly, getting off the mark in a 3-1 Community Shield win versus Manchester City and again adding to his tally during Saturday's 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage. Much was made of the Uruguayan's performances at the start of the pre-season by rival supporters, though early doubts have quickly disappeared.

Nunez showed great improvisation to flick home from close range against Marco Silva's side and later set up Mohamed Salah's goal, despite only being introduced in the 51st minute of proceedings by Jurgen Klopp.

Convinced by what he has witnessed from the former Benfica man so far, Hoddle is of the view that the Reds continue to lead the way when it comes to player recruitment having identified the club's next major hit in the form of Nunez.

“He looks the real deal,” the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder told Premier League Productions. "He has good movement and has shown his ability to win balls in the air, so there’s another little option Liverpool now have. I don’t think they have had that option for the past few seasons. They have a good player on their hands.

"Liverpool’s recruitment has been absolutely fantastic for the last two or three seasons," added Hoddle. "Look at Diaz, he came out of nowhere. He was going to Tottenham, then ‘No he’s not... he’s coming to Liverpool’. And bang! They seem to do it every season at the moment.”

Diaz was also impressive during Liverpool's disappointing draw away to Fulham, seeing on effort ruled out for offside before striking the woodwork later on in the contest with a fierce shot from close range. The Colombian attacker arrived at Anfield during the January transfer window and was responsible for 11 goal contributions when representing the Reds during the 2021/22 season.
