The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has issued numerous warnings and product recalls in Irish supermarkets over the past fortnight.
The products were pulled from shelves for issues ranging from undisclosed allergies, unauthorised chemicals and dangerous manufacturing mistakes.
Here are all the latest recalls over the past two weeks:
MAMA Oriental Style Noodles:
One batch of MAMA Oriental Style Instant Noodles with Tom Yum Pork Flavour is being taken off shelves due to the possible presence of glass.
The products affected have a best before date of 28/04/2022.
MAMA is a popular noodles brand that is sold in many specialty stores and supermarkets across Ireland, including Tesco.
The FSAI said point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated batch.
Frank & Honest Coffee cans
There have been a number of implicated batches of Frank & Honest Cold Brews that were mis-packed with an Oat Latte Drink.
The product contains oats that are not mentioned on the label, and therefore pose a risk to some customers - particularly coeliacs.
“This may make the batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of gluten,” the FSAI warns.
The batches affected by this recall have a use-by-date of May 3,4 and 5 2022 and are packs of 250ml.
Those who have bought the product with the above dates and size can return the cans for a full refund at their point of purchase.
Forclaz Rice and Chicken Curry
Decathlon is recalling a batch of its Forclaz Rice and Chicken Curry due to the presence of the unauthorised pesticide ethylene oxide.
The sports store is pulling the freeze-dried dish as the pesticide is not authorised for use in food sold in the EU.
The FSAI says that "although the consumption of the contaminated product does not pose an acute risk to health, there may be health issues if there is continued consumption of ethylene oxide over a long period of time".
Therefore, exposure to this substance needs to be minimised.
It concerns a batch of the product “Trekking rice with curry chicken, gluten-free” with the number: 16621003 and the expiry date: 15.06.2024.
Emergen-C Energy Supplements
Batches of popular energy supplement tablets made by Emergen-C have been recalled, also due to ethylene oxide.
While the pesticide is okay for use in foods outside the EU, it is not permitted inside the EU.
The affected batches are all in the Super Orange flavour, with lot numbers, FUB03, NT489 and GU393.
SuperValu Long Grain Rice
One of the most popular products in SuperValu was recalled on October 12 by the Food Safety Authority.
Pieces of wood have been found in batches of the SuperValu Long Grain Rice.
All batches in blue packaging have been affected.
The red packages are not affected.
The FSAI said: "As a precaution, SuperValu is recalling all batches of it's SuperValu Long Grain Rice due to the possible presence of wood fragments.
"All batches in blue packaging as per the picture below are affected. SuperValu Long Grain Rice in red packaging is not affected by this recall. Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated batches."
King Oscar canned fish
In a bizarre food alert, The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has issued a warning for tins of herring and sardines by Polish brand King Oscar as they don’t declare the presence of fish in English.
Some packs of King Oscar Śledź and King Oscar Szproty in Irish stores may not have ingredients labelled in English.
The FSAI said: “The product contains fish which may make it unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of fish.”
