Thousands of people are to get a £25 payment as temperatures plummet. The Department of Work and Pensions gives the money to some households to help pay for the extra heating needed to keep warm.
The money is paid when temperatures fall below zero - or is forecast to be - for seven days in a row. It is paid to qualifying households in England and Wales, however people living in Scotland have different arrangements.
To qualify for the payment you will need to be eligible for at least on of certain benefits. According to the DWP you may get Cold Weather Payments if you’re getting:
- Pension Credit
- Income Support
- income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Universal Credit
- Support for Mortgage Interest
The DWP says people will get the £25 payment for every seven day period of very cold weather between November 1 and March 31. It says: "After each period of very cold weather in your area, you should get a payment within 14 working days. It’s paid into the same bank or building society account as your benefit payments."
You do not have to do anything to get the benefit. According to the DWP it will be paid automatically into the same bank or building society account as other benefit payments.
The DWP confirmed that cold weather payments had been triggered at over 500 postcodes between Monday and Friday last week.
