Every Glasgow project set to share £35m fund - and the 223 who will miss out

More than £34.5million is set to be awarded to 165 projects run by community groups in Glasgow this week — but over 200 funding bids could be turned down.

Third sector organisations have been bidding for cash from the council’s three-year Communities Fund which totals almost £56m.

With just over £6.5m set aside for financial support groups, almost £50m was left over to be shared between other bodies. However, 436 competent bids were received, requesting £136.5m.

Last Thursday, councillors agreed to hand out £14.8m to 70 citywide projects as 73 applications were turned down. This week, just under £35m will be shared between applicants in the north east, north west and south of the city, with sector meetings to be held tomorrow [Thursday] and Friday.

It is recommended that 165 bids are successful while 223 are ruled unsuccessful. This breaks down to 58 winning applications in both the south and north east and 49 in the north west.

In the north east sector, Glasgow Kelvin College is expected to receive £600,000 for a project focused on reducing isolation, improving skills and boosting physical and mental health. It will provide learning opportunities to “help people create better futures for themselves, their families and communities”.

One of the north east bids not recommended to receive funding came from Brighter Baillieston, which asked for £415,492 to help run Garrowhill Community Centre. The organisation wants to provide a range of services to reduce isolation and improve health and wellbeing.

Lambhill Stables, a community organisation, is set to get funding in the north west sector, with almost £528,000 recommended. It works to tackle poverty and inequality and “minimise disadvantages experienced by those with protected characteristics”. Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust, which asked for just over £418,000, isn’t recommended for funding in the north west category.

In the south sector, Castlemilk Community Football Trust is set to miss out on funding to help it manage and develop the Barlia complex. The group requested just over £530,500 towards “creating a high quality sporting and wellbeing space” for the community, which would include work to reduce barriers to physical activity and tackle poverty and social isolation.

The Jeely Piece Club, which runs a range of services for children and families at a playzone in Castlemilk, including holiday programmes and parent and toddler classes, is recommended to get over £479,000 from the south sector funding.

After the citywide funding was agreed, Cllr Christina Cannon, convener for education, communities and equalities, said the money would “help our citizens and communities most in need”.

“This is a major investment in the third sector and organisations who will deliver a variety of support across the three main aims of the Glasgow Communities Fund — supporting communities, equalities and arts and culture,” she said.

However, some charities which missed out on funding have reported they face closure as a result. The council has said there has been a “comprehensive, robust, open and transparent process”.

Across all four categories, 296 applications have been unsuccessful while 235 funding awards will be made. The fund will run from April 1 this year until March 31, 2026.

Most projects will not receive the full amount requested while some groups have been unsuccessful in one sector but have been awarded money in another.

Council officials said the quality of bids was “exceptionally high”. “This provides a strong indication of the calibre of the third and voluntary sector organisations operating in Glasgow,” a report added.
