Everton were denied a last-gasp penalty as Manchester United fought from behind to claim a draw in a dramatic Premier League clash at Goodison Park.
Everton, who led by two goals at half-time only for United to draw level, were awarded a penalty deep in stoppage time as Ashley Young went down in the box.
But referee Andrew Madley overturned his decision after an on-field review, ruling that Young had thrown himself to the ground under the challenge of Matthijs de Ligt.
Everton had appeared to be continuing their resurgence under David Moyes as goals from striker Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure fired the Toffees into a deserved half-time lead.
But as United looked to be slipping to a third defeat in a row, captain Bruno Fernandes stepped up to curl a free-kick past Jordan Pickford and give the visitors late hope.
Manuel Ugarte then found the equaliser as he smashed in a volley from the edge of the box, and United finished the stronger side as Pickford tipped over a Fernandes shot.
And while United remain 15th in the table, behind 12th-placed Everton, the hosts will feel they should have had an opportunity to take all three points on a dramatic afternoon.

Manchester United’s illogical comeback can’t hide an alarming trend
18:13 , Richard Jolly, at Goodison ParkDavid Moyes and Ruben Amorim can testify to the difficulties of walking in Sir Alex Ferguson’s footsteps. The most famous comment made by Manchester United’s most decorated manager came after his most celebrated comeback. Football, bloody hell? As two of his successors met, this seemed another case of it, a fightback that, like Ferguson’s against Bayern Munich in 1999, was remarkable in part because it felt inexplicable, because United were out of sorts, outclassed, seemingly out for the count.
Much of Everton’s display was testament to Moyes’s transformative effect. Much of United’s was atrocious. They nevertheless emerged with a point apiece. It was thanks in part to the catalytic prowess of Bruno Fernandes and his refusal to accept a defeat that his teammates seemed resigned to.

Manchester United turn around ’embarrassing’ display to snatch draw at Everton
15:40 , Chris WilsonManuel Ugarte’s stunning strike and an overturned penalty decision at the death helped Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United escape with a 2-2 comeback draw at David Moyes’ Everton.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at Old Trafford looked set to inflict a 13th Premier League defeat of the season on the wretched Red Devils, who have won just four top-flight games since the Portuguese arrived in November.
Moyes has overseen as many league wins since returning to Everton in January and looked set to add another after Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure benefited from some abysmal first-half defending.

Premier League releases VAR statement on Everton’s overturned penalty against Manchester United
15:30 , Chris WilsonThe Premier League has explained why Everton saw a last-gasp penalty overturned during their dramatic 2-2 draw against Manchester United.
David Moyes’ side led at half-time thanks to goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure but were pegged back in the second half at Goodison after strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte.
However, Everton thought they had been handed the chance to claim all three points in stoppage time when Ashley Young went down in the box and referee Andrew Madley pointed to the penalty spot.

Premier League releases VAR statement on Everton’s overturned penalty against Man Utd
Fernandes reacts
15:20 , Chris WilsonBruno Fernandes is the only player to speak to TNT, and he says that it was the right decision to overturn the penalty.
“The ref said the hand was very close from the body,” he explains.
“We had our chances in the second half, but we started too late. We were too static, it was difficult to create.
“We need to start games better, we know that. Every time we concede, when we are down, is when we start [to play].
“[We need] to stick to the plan, to make it work. We have to stick to what our ideas are, that’s what we did in the second half with much more freedom, more movement.
“This club is all about results. We have to do much more, everyone has to lift each others’ standards,” he adds as he finishes.
Moyes reacts
15:12 , Chris WilsonEverton boss David Moyes said that his side “had a couple of chances to make it 3-0”, but his side can’t be too disappointed with a draw.
“We were up against a great side, I know they’re not in a great moment, but getting a point isn’t the worst result.
“It feels disappointing having been 2-0 up. We probably did as well as we could do.
“I thought free-kick decisions were correct, but look at the decisions the referee didn’t give in the first half,” he adds.
On the penalty, he says: “I’ve had a look, he undoubtedly pulls his jersey. I thought the on-field decision looked correct, I’m a bit surprised he was asked to go to VAR. It looks difficult to change your mind on that.”
Moyes adds that decisions “went against us today, we’re not going to complain too much about it”, adding that survival is not assured.
“We have to get more points. Recent results are looking great, and today’s result was good as well.
“How we played, how the crowd saw the team performing [was important],” he adds.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea - 5.30pm
FULL-TIME! Everton 2-2 Man Utd
15:00 , Chris WilsonThis result means that it is just four wins in 15 Premier League matches for Ruben Amorim so far. That is a serious worry for United fans and the hierarchy.
It’s possibly a tad harsh on the Portuguese, but it’s notable how few, if any, of United’s players are performing any better now than they were under ten Hag.
Amorim reacts
14:55 , Chris WilsonUnited boss Ruben Amorim has spoken to TNT Sports.
He says that he doesn’t think it was a penalty, calling it a “soft touch”.
“It was soft, it was clear,” he says on the decision to overturn.
“if you start the game without losing 2-0, it’s a good point, but we need to play all the game,” he says.
“The worst part is that we are losing the ball without any pressure, we’re not doing what we’re supposed to do. We concede two goals via second balls. We were soft.
“In the second half, we didn’t change anything. We have to do the same things but in a good way,” he adds.
On his side’s biggest problem being scoring, he says: “Yes, not just scoring goals but creating chances. We struggle with scoring goals.
“I don’t know. We have to continue to think about the next game. Everything we do during the week we have to use in the game.
“In this moment we need to focus on the day-to-day.
We need to survive this season then think ahead.
“It’s really hard. The second half was so much better, and in the end we were near to winning this game,” he adds as he finishes.
Premier League comment on penalty decision
14:51 , Chris WilsonThe Premier League has released their official comment on the penalty decision.
“VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review.
“The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.”

Premier League table
14:47 , Chris WilsonThis result means Everton stay a point ahead of United, with the Toffees now in 12th, with 31 points.
United sit in 15th, with 30 points. They can’t fall lower than that this weekend, though West Ham could be level on points with them if they were to beat Arsenal later today.
FULL-TIME! Everton 2-2 Man Utd
14:43 , Chris WilsonIt was a great game for the neutral in the end, with the goal giving United some belief and injecting some pace into the game.
It was end-to-end in the final 20 minutes or so, and though Everton did enough to win the game in the end, they come away with a draw having been 2-0 up.
Despite a great game overall, it will likely be overshadowed at least somewhat by that penalty call. A strange decision to say the least.

PENALTY OVERTURNED! Everton 2-2 Man Utd
14:31 , Chris Wilson95 mins
Young does go down quite theatrically, but there’s definitely an arm or two around him...
And it’s overturned! That will provoke huge debate.
The question is, was there enough evidence to overturn the original decision?
PENALTY TO EVERTON! Everton 2-2 Man Utd
14:29 , Chris Wilson94 mins
The hosts have a penalty!
From Gueye’s shot, Onana can only palm it straight back into the box. There are two Everton players about to latch onto the rebound, and de Ligt drags down Young!
There’s a review though! This looks like a penalty – there shouldn’t be enough to overturn that decision.

All of a sudden, United are threatening in attack, with Dorgu winning a corner.

It’s a decent goal too, as Fernandes’ free-kick is headed straight to Ugarte, who brings it down before rifling a volley past Pickford from just inside the box.

Everton 2-1 Man Utd
14:12 , Chris Wilson77 mins
United have improved in possession since Fernandes move into a deeper role when Garnacho came on, but they still haven’t really created anything in attack from open play.
The visitors have a spell of sustained possession in the Everton half, but there aren’t any routes through the Everton defence yet.
Everton 2-1 Man Utd

Once again, United are relying on moments of individual quality to get them back into games. They look like they’ll need another one if they’re to get anything from this, as the team effort does not look like producing a goal.
Everton 2-1 Man Utd
14:08 , Richard Jolly, at Goodison ParkUntil Bruno Fernandes scored United's belated first league goal in February, their xG today was 0.04. They have been hopeless today and yet there is a chance now they could get a point. Everton's last home game was a 2-2 with a very late goal. They enjoyed that. They would not enjoy a repeat.

GOAL! United have one back!
It looks like a great goal too, as Fernandes steps up and rifles the free-kick into the bottom-right corner.

Some lovely play in midfield from the hosts, with a great dummy allowing them to play out from their own half. That really illustrates how confident the hosts are.

United have been slightly better in this half, but they’re still lacking the pace and intensity to cause Everton any problems.
The hosts are knocking it around in a pretty relaxed manner at the moment.

Everton 2-0 Man Utd
13:52 , Chris Wilson57 mins
Half a chance for the hosts as the cross comes all the way across the box and falls to Young, whose ball in causes some problems before United lunge into two decent blocks.
The ball falls to Hojlund and he tries to lead a counter, but unsurprisingly he is easily shepherded off the ball by Tarkowski.
Everton 2-0 Man Utd
13:50 , Chris Wilson55 mins
United win possession from the corner and they flood forward on the counter, but there’s a distinct lack of runs ahead of whoever has the ball, and once again they go backwards before winning a free-kick.
The lack of attacking patterns will worry United fans – there have been a couple of occasions in which Ugarte has been isolated as one of the furthest players forward, for example.
Everton 2-0 Man Utd
13:50 , Richard Jolly, at Goodison ParkThe omission of Garnacho feels odder with every minute of this ponderous performance even if one of the many problems with Amorim's 3-4-3 is that it doesn't really suit Garnacho. Or, for that matter, many of United's other players. Meanwhile, a United winger of yesteryear has come on. It may rub it in for them if 39-year-old Ashley Young finds the net.

HALF-TIME! Everton 2-0 Man Utd
13:33 , Chris WilsonThere’s plenty of criticism on United at half-time, with words such as ‘passive’ being used to describe their performance.
While Everton have been great in attack, United have certainly been guilty of showing a lack of intensity as well as little quality in attack, while some of the defending has been terrible too.
Nevertheless, the hosts deserve plenty of credit for their display so far, with their intensity matched by some quality in the final third.

Unsurprisingly, Everton are looking very comfortable in possession as the half comes to an end.
Both sides look content to go in for half-time at the moment.
Everton 2-0 Man Utd

When United do have the ball, it’s all a little bit static ahead of whoever is in possession.
They do win a free-kick near the touchline, but Fernandes’ ball in is cleared before Ugarte fires a speculative effort well wide from outside the area.
Everton 2-0 Man Utd
13:11 , Richard Jolly, at Goodison ParkAnother abject United performance, another bit of disastrous defending for the second goal. It was too easy for Beto to run in behind the slow defence. No one tracked Jack Harrison's run. Doucoure outjumped a static Harry Maguire to score. And now the talk at Goodison is of how Everton could score three goals in a first half for the third time in four games.

Everton have the latest chance too, as they win a free-kick midway into the United half, but Dorgu manages to clear.
It’s the hosts who are continuing to have the more dangerous possession.
Everton 1-0 Man Utd
12:57 , Richard Jolly, at Goodison ParkThe messiest of goals, not that Everton will care. United had five chances to clear Jack Harrison's corner, didn't really succeed at any and the newly prolific Beto pounced. United's record of conceding from corners is dreadful since Amorim came in and put his assistant Carlos Fernandes in charge of set-pieces.

There’s a VAR check for offside, as Beto could be standing in an offside position depending on whether a United player took the last touch before it came to him. That one looks okay.
There’s also a check for Beto being offside earlier, but it looks fairly clear that he doesn't affect play. Not sure why this is taking so long.
GOAL! Everton 1-0 Man Utd

It’ll be checked by VAR, but it’s poor defending.

12:45 , Richard Jolly, at Goodison Park14 mins: United's attempts to pass out from the back feel perilous, with Everton pressing high and well and offered encouragement to continue that. United, meanwhile, have lopsided No 10s with Bruno Fernandes deeper than a miscast Joshua Zirkzee.

Can David Moyes haunt Manchester United again?
12:27 , Jamie BraidwoodDavid Moyes won his last two Premier League home matches against Manchester United while in charge of West Ham. He defeated Manchester United at Goodison in the final season of his first spell at Everton, with Marouane Fellaini scoring in a 1-0 win.
Everton's bounce under David Moyes
12:21 , Jamie BraidwoodEverton have scored 12 goals in their last five Premier League fixtures, having managed 11 in their previous 16.
Key to that has been Beto, who has scored four goals in his last three Premier League games, having managed just four in his previous 44 appearances. If Beto scores today, he will be the first Everton player to score in four games in a row in the Premier League since Richarlison in 2021.
Struggles in front of goal for Man Utd
12:15 , Jamie BraidwoodManchester United have failed to score in 10 Premier League games this season, which is just one away from an unwanted club record in the competition. Only Everton, who have failed to score in 12 games this season, have a worse record.
United have also failed to score from open play in the first half of their previous 10 top-flight matches, with their only goal in that run Bruno Fernandes' penalty against Brighton on 19 January. They’ve failed to score before half time in 15 of the last 16 Premier League games.
Ruben Amorim's side have lost eight of their past 12 Premier League games, and they have lost 12 Premier League games in total this season. They last team they lost 12 of their first 25 top-flight matches was in 1973-74, when they were relegated.
Everton vs Man Utd match stats
12:07 , Jamie BraidwoodA crumb of comfort for Manchester United as they travel to Goodison is their excellent recent record against Everton. United have won their last five Premier League games at Everton, including their last two at Goodison. Everton have failed to score in their last four - and if they don’t score today iit will be the first time they’ve lost five consecutive games without scoring against a single opponent since the 1960s.

Man Utd’s mistakes have plunged them into the red – and it’s about to get worse
12:00 , Jamie BraidwoodManchester United’s finances have been in the headlines this week as they revealed the in-season sacking of Erik ten Hag and departure of Dan Ashworth cost the club £14.5m.
Ten Hag’s tenure was ended in October after a stuttering start to the Premier League campaign and finishes of third and eighth in his two full seasons in charge.
The manager had been backed by the club’s hierarchy just a few months prior after leading Manchester United to FA Cup triumph at Wembley, but a quick call was made as they sought improvements on the pitch.
While the brief interim tenure of Ruud van Nistelrooy brought better results, Amorim has endured similar struggles to Ten Hag with the club languishing in 15th place after the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Man Utd’s mistakes plunged them into the red – and it’s about to get worse
The good news for a Manchester United team who are decidedly short on goals: they have won their last four games against Everton without conceding. Ruben Amorim has nevertheless dropped a man who scored a glorious goal at Goodison Park, with Alejandro Garnacho winning the Puskas Award for last season's overhead kick here, to bring back Manuel Ugarte. Presumably Bruno Fernandes will move further forward. David Moyes omits a goalscorer, too, with last week's matchwinner Carlos Alcaraz benched as Abdoulaye Doucoure returns from a ban.

Charly Alcaraz wants to stay at Everton after loan spell
11:45 , Jamie BraidwoodEverton loan signing Charly Alcaraz feels he has unfinished business in the Premier League, having returned just six months after leaving. The 22-year-old Argentinian scored in last week’s win at Crystal Palace and is already becoming a fan favourite.
"It would be brilliant to play there for sure," said Alcaraz. "I would like to settle down and be playing in this shirt for a longer period for sure.
"The manager (Moyes) speaks really slowly and clearly to me and my English is good enough to follow when it is a team talk and it is directed to me or a group, but when it is two people chatting away that is more difficult.
"The first thing he said was he had a lot of faith in me and that he would put his trust in me. Immediately, that really relaxed me and gave me confidence.
"I know what a big challenge it is playing here for Everton but I think the confidence from the manager, his coaching staff and my team-mates means I can do my thing, do my own stuff and prove who I am as a player."

Ruben Amorim likes the 'sound' of Man Utd training
11:05 , Jamie BraidwoodRuben Amorim insisted that Manchester United are looking more positive on the training ground, despite their current form and results on the pitch, and believes his team is connecting.
“What I see in training is that they are improving, they are creating relationships. Even the sound of the training is different.
“I feel it in training that we are bonding and we are understanding the way we want to play. But then in the game, I feel that we struggle a lot.
“[In training] people are talking, asking for the ball, giving directions, talking with each other, and you can feel it in the environment.
“If you spend your life as a football player and as a coach, even the sound of the training is important, so I feel that we are changing that.
“But, again, everything resumes to the game on Sunday or Saturday or whatever, so it’s important to use that in the game.”

Ruben Amorim does not regret taking Manchester United job
10:50 , Jamie BraidwoodManchester United have won just four of their 14 Premier League games since Ruben Amorim took charge in November, losing eight.
But the Portuguese does not regret taking the job mid-season, even though he admits his struggles in turning the club’s form around is “frustrating”.
“We make a decision and then we go all the way. Of course sometimes it’s really frustrating,” he said. “When you hear out loud 14 games four wins in Manchester United, even in another club it’s really hard. It’s really frustrating and sometimes you get really frustrated, angry and everything.
“But let’s move on and we can change that in the next game.”
Ruben Amorim admits David Moyes is doing a better job than him
10:30 , Jamie BraidwoodRuben Amorim admitted David Moyes is simply "doing a better job" than he is currently as Manchester United's under-fire head coach prepares to take on Sir Alex Ferguson's successor.
Amorim is United's sixth permanent manager since Ferguson retired as a champion in 2013, but he has overseen just four Premier League wins since following Erik ten Hag in November.
Moyes has won as many top-flight matches since returning to Everton in January, with the their latest victory seeing them move above the Red Devils ahead of the clubs' final ever meeting at Goodison Park.
Asked why Everton, now in 14th, enjoyed a new manager bounce unlike 15th-placed United, Amorim said: "Simple thing...David Moyes is doing a better job than me. It's quite simple.
"And then small things like winning one game, winning two games, that belief. The pressure is also not the same.
"I don't know but I think we have to give merit to the players of Everton and especially to the coach of Everton and that's all. We need to do the same."

David Moyes on Everton's form
10:10 , Jamie BraidwoodEverton have won four Premier League wins in their last five games, with David Moyes taking the Toffees away from the relegation zone and above Manchester United since taking charge.
“We've had a really good run and we've got to try to keep that going now," Moyes said, with Everton drawing against Liverpool and beating Crystal Palace in their last two games, while United have lost to Palace and Tottenham.
"When you take over a team a little bit into the season, you have to find a way of getting the best results. Whatever we have asked the players to do, they've been fantastic. We are playing a lot better and doing a lot better in recent games."
David Moyes on facing Manchester United
09:50 , Jamie BraidwoodDavid Moyes says he will treat the occasion of facing Manchester United like any other match.
The Scot succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson but was dismissed during the 2013-14 season.

David Moyes on Everton's team news
09:30 , Jamie BraidwoodDespite offering a positive update on the progress of the injured Iliman Ndiaye, Moyes will continue to be without the winger as well as Nathan Patterson, Youssef Chermiti, Seamus Coleman, Dwight McNeil, Armando Broja, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Orel Mangala.
"We've got them both fit at the moment so that gives us a decision to make," Moyes said on whether he will continue with Charly Alcaraz or reintroduce Abdoulaye Doucoure into his XI.
"We'll look at it and I'll need both of them - we're really short of numbers here. I think I've got nine or 10 players out injured so for us to be getting results with that amount of players out is great credit to the players who are playing at the moment. I don't think we have any additional injuries, and I don't think, at the moment, we have anyone coming back from injury."
Ruben Amorim on Man Utd team news
09:10 , Jamie BraidwoodManuel Ugarte, Leny Yoro and Christian Eriksen return as Manchester United head to Everton on the back of a positive week.
Amorim said: “We didn’t lose players, we recover players. With Chris (last week) it was a misunderstanding and I want to be really clear on that, also because of Chris. He’s healthy and is ready to play for many years in a high level.
“Just my limitation explaining the injuries, and I want to make this really clear. I felt that the week is really good. I see things in training, but sometimes it’s hard to pass that to the game, but I feel that they are improving.
“Sometimes we cannot show that in the game, but I hope that tomorrow is another opportunity to show a better performance.”
