Everton vs Manchester City LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction

Goodison Park, the home of Everton - (Getty Images)

Follow live coverage as Everton face Manchester City today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United's latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year - yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.

Meanwhile, it's Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

It took them a while to get going but Pep Guardiola's side were clinical in the last 15 minutes as goals from O'Reilly and Kovacic hand them what might be a crucial win in the race for Champions League, especially given that fellow rivals Aston Villa and Newcastle go head to head in the late kick-off. O'Reilly was exceptional at both ends of the pitch today and in the 84th minute, took his goal like a striker, ghosting into the six-yard box to tap home Nunes' cross. Substitute Kovacic then put the game to bed in injury time, sliding a Gundogan set-back into the bottom corner to score his second goal in consecutive games. They are now undefeated in five league games and host Villa at the Etihad on Tuesday evening. Moyes will have been pleased with his Everton’s performance for the first 75 minutes, as they defended diligently and could have had a couple of goals of their own, first a Tarkowski header against the post and then a goal-bound Doucoure effort that was blocked by Gvardiol. Ultimately though, they did not create enough only creating 0.93xG compared to City’s 2.09. Everton now have a week’s break before they travel to Chelsea in next weekend’s early kick-off. That’s all for today, thank you for following this live coverage and see you next time!

This game has started to open up now as Everton counter through Doucoure after a strong tackle from Mykolenko. The ball travels across to Ndiaye who hits it narrowly wide from 25 yards out.

Tidy combination between Gundogan and Marmoush tees up a half-volley on the edge of the area for the former, but the strike is straight at Pickford.

Substitution Armando Broja Norberto Bercique Gomes Betuncal

Everton vs Manchester City

SAVED! Ndiaye finds Doucoure on the left corner of the penalty area who stands up Nunes and does well to twist away from the defender to create some space. His powerful left-footed shot from a tight angle is heading towards the top corner but Ortega saves well.

16:10

More sharp work from Gvardiol as Ndiaye bursts onto a through ball outside the penalty area but the Croatian covers across and nudges the Everton forward off the ball.

Everton vs Manchester City

16:09

A sad sight for Everton fans as Tarkowski limps off the field with an injury as Keane comes on in his place.

Everton vs Manchester City

16:08

After a pretty even first-half, Everton have a 22.8% chance of victory while City remain favourites at 41%. The draw is 36.8% according to Opta's win probability tool. Let's hope the game livens up in this second period.

Everton vs Manchester City

16:06

Everton go close again as Doucoure's shot from inside the area is blocked well by Gvardiol as it looked destined for the bottom corner. It's been a strong start from the hosts.

Everton vs Manchester City

16:05

HUGE CHANCE! A free-kick for Everton finds its way to Branthwaite three yards out and he flicks a header towards goal but Ortega sticks a hand out and makes a sharp save.

Everton vs Manchester City

16:03

We're back underway for the second half at Goodison Park. Who will break the deadlock?

Everton vs Manchester City

15:56

One big chance for either side in what has been a relatively low-key affair at Goodison Park so far. Tarkowski headed against the post from a corner after 30 minutes before De Bruyne nearly put Manchester City ahead on the stroke of half-time with a left-footed strike towards the bottom corner that was blocked brilliantly by the head of O’Brien. Everton had just one shot in the first half, generating 0.18xG while City managed only two shots on target with an xG of 0.23. Moyes will be pleased with his side’s defensive performance, though, as they have stuck to their task with discipline, shutting down space in the final third and harrying the City midfield well.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:48

HALF-TIME: EVERTON 0-0 MANCHESTER CITY

Everton vs Manchester City

15:46

BRILLIANT BLOCK! Nunes skips into the right side of the box and pulls a ball back for De Bruyne on the penalty spot who curls a left-footed effort towards the bottom corner but O'Brien sticks his head in the way and deflects it behind for a corner. Superb defending.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:44

Both centre forwards, Broja (15 touches) and Marmoush (13) have struggled to get into this game. Both sides have limited space well in the final third.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:42

Tarkowski wins the ball back high and releases Doucoure inside the penaty area. He drives in towards goal but Gvardiol recovers superbly to win a goal kick.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:39

Silky feet from Savinho as he sells O'Brien on the left flank with a dummy. The Brazilian whips in a low cross which is turned behind for a corner. Branthwaite clears the delivery.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:38

Gueye wins the ball back off Gonzalez on the halfway line and drives infield. His pass finds Harrison on the right flank who digs out a decent cross but Gvardiol heads clear. Everton have been the better side in thee last ten minutes.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:35

Everton vs Manchester City

15:30

A lovely spell of Everton passing ends with a wayward ball towards Mykolenko who can only head the ball out for a goal kick. The football has been pretty from both sides so far but lacked any incision.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:28

O'Reilly attemps to slide a pinpoint through ball into Savinho down the left but puts too much on it and the ball runs safely through to Pickford. Everton are beginning to enjoy some more possession now.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:25

There have been just seven touches in either penalty area in this opening 25 minutes. It feels like a game that is waiting to be sparked into life.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:23

Guardiola's side are really struggling to penetrate Everton so far. Gvardiol and Dias have spent plenty of time on the ball as they look for an opening but the home side are yet to budge. Moyes' side have only made 14 passes in the final third.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:19

Manchester City have had 67% possession in this opening quarter but Everton are defending diligently and restricting the visitors' space in and around the penalty area.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:17

Nunes has the game's first shot on target. He cuts onto his left foot and hits a low drive towards the bottom corner from 20 yards out. Pickford gets down well and pushes behind for a corner.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:16

City continue to probe as De Bruyne whips in a trademark cross from the right-hand side but it evades Savinho at the far post, who goes down and wants a penalty. The contact looked minimal at best.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:13

O'Reilly misjudges a Mykolenko cross at the back post which nearly allows Harrison to steal in, but the youngster gets his body across well to shield the ball and earn a free-kick, nullifying any threat.

Everton vs Manchester City

15:11

Wonderful football from the home side gets Everton into the City area for the first time. Ndiaye gets away from two challenges before a cross to the back post towards Harrison is too long.

15:09

Everton vs Manchester City

15:04

O'Reilly starts well, driving past a couple of challenges and moving it onto Savinho who pulls a ball back across the six-yard box but Everton clear

David Moyes is winless in his last 15 Premier League meetings with Manchester City (D2 L13). However, as Everton manager, he only won more league games against Fulham (14) than he did against the Citizens (12), winning each of his last four against them at Goodison Park.

Everton vs Manchester City

14:46

Guardiola makes four changes from the side that beat Crystal Palace last time out. Ortega starts in goal following an injury to Ederson last weekend, whilst Nunes, Silva and Savinho come in for Lewis, McAtee and Kovacic. 20-year-old O’Reilly keeps his place at left-back following impressive performances in the last few weeks.

Everton vs Manchester City

14:46

Moyes names an unchanged side following last weekend's victory against Forest. Broja starts up front once again, with the Albanian yet to score in his nine Premier League appearances this season, following a September loan move from Chelsea.

Everton vs Manchester City

14:35

Since the return of David Moyes in January, Everton have been in fine form and sit comfortably clear of the relegation zone in 13th, though they have drawn three of their last five games. Abdoulaye Doucore’s 90th minute winner at the City Ground last weekend earned them an impressive 1-0 win against high-flying Nottingham Forest, and they will be looking to take that momentum into today’s game as the Goodison Park era draws to a close. As for Manchester City, it’s been an indifferent season which sees them in the thick of a race for Champions League qualification. But despite only winning twice in their last five league games, they have started to look more like the side that won four Premier League titles on the bounce. January signing Omar Marmoush, who starts up front today, has scored six goals in his first 10 Premier League games. Only Erling Haaland (15) and Gabriel Jesus (7) have scored more in their first 10 games in the Pep Guardiola era. With the news of Kevin De Bruyne’s departure at the end of the season, City will be keen to give their club legend a memorable send off over the coming weeks. Opta’s win probability has them with a 48.5% chance of victory today in Merseyside.
