Everton 0-2 Bournemouth, Southampton 0-1 Burnley: FA Cup fourth round – as it happened

Right, that’s all for our coverage of the 3pm kick-offs. Feel free to switch over to the action at St Andrew’s, where Birmingham and Newcastle have exchanged goals via Ethan Laird and Joe Willock. Otherwise, enjoy the rest of yer Saturday.

Updated

David Moyes has also shared his thoughts. “We conceded two terrible goals,” he said. “But we kept at it, did not give them too many opportunities – it just was not going to go in. All the substitutions gave us a lot of energy, I hope those players continue to do that towards the rest of the season.”

Andoni Iraola has been speaking to the BBC after Bournemouth’s 2-0 win at Everton. “A great result for us,” he said. “Two different halves. First half we were better. Second half they pushed us more and we were defending more. Also we played the worst kind of football but we defended well.

“[Last season in the fifth round] we played against Leicester – they scored an amazing goal in extra time – and we couldn’t play the quarter-finals. Let’s see if we can go one step more. Playing in an FA Cup quarter-final would sound nice. It’s still too early [to think about winning the tournament]. There will still be 15 other teams. Let’s see what the draw says.”

Here’s our Championship roundup, fresh off the press. Sheffield United and West Brom secured 2-1 victories against Portsmouth and Sheffield Wednesday respectively, while Sunderland drew 2-2 with Watford and Norwich were held 1-1 by Derby.

Cardiff beat Stoke 4-2 on penalties!

Wouter Burger and Chris Willock exchange successful penalties. Rubin Colwill steps up and closes out a dramatic win for the visitors.

Updated

Meanwhile, at the Bet365 Stadium, it’s 2-1 to Cardiff as Calum Chambers finds the net. Tatsuki Seko and Yousef Salech both failed to convert after successful spot kicks from Tezgel and Joe Ralls.

Preston beat Wycombe 4-2 on penalties!

But, no. Ched Evans scores for Preston to make it 4-2 to the hosts and they go through to the fifth round.

Updated

But wait a minute! Ali McCann fires over the bar for Preston. Josh Scowen nets for Wycombe. They’re still in it.

Mads Frøkjær scores for Preston. Freddie Woodman keeps out Adam Reach and Wycombe’s FA Cup hopes are hanging by a thread.

Milutin Osmajic scores for Preston. Daniel Udoh steps up for Wycombe … and it’s saved! It’s 2-1 to the hosts.

It’s also gone to penalties at Stoke. Get ready for a deluge of updates.

Sam Greenwood scores the opening penalty for Preston. Beryly Lubala answers in kind for Wycombe.

Penalties at Preston. The hosts ended up with 19 shots, seven of which were on target, so it wasn’t for the want of trying.

We’ve got some correspondence. “Will Fish is an excellent name for someone who plies his trade on weekends!” writes Peter Oh. If you’re trying to draw me into some kind of pun battle, Peter, I’m not taking the bait.

Rob Smyth is helming our dedicated live coverage of Newcastle’s fourth-round match at Birmingham. Open another tab, go on, dare you.

The first phase of extra time at the Bet365 Stadium is over, with Stoke and Cardiff still locked at 3-3. Emre Tezgel and Will Fish have had decent chances at either end, but it’s still anyone’s game.

And, just like that, Peter Lansley’s take on Ipswich’s big win at Coventry has landed. Give it a read.

Andy Hunter’s report from Goodison Park’s last ever FA Cup tie has landed. It was a disappointing afternoon for Everton, though the post came to Bournemouth’s rescue on several occasions.

The tie between Preston and Wycombe is still goalless, with the first half of extra time now over and done with. They could well be heading for penalties.

Millwall racked up a 2-0 win against Leeds at Elland Road earlier, but the game was marred by tragedy chanting. Will Unwin’s report is here.

Thanks Dom. Talk about being thrown in at the deep end. It’s all over at Coventry, where Ipswich have won 4-1 and are through to the fifth round.

I’m going to hand over to Will Magee who’s now in place to cover those juicy extra times, and bring you some reaction from the 3pm games. Maybe he’ll even get a penalty or two to write about.

Updated

So, to confirm, we’re still following Stoke 3-3 Cardiff and Preston 0-0 Wycombe, as well as the final knockings of Coventry 1-4 Ipswich.

There are some tired legs out there, especially at the Bet 365 Stadium, where it’s been like a basketball game.

In the Championship, Norwich were pegged back very late on by Jerry Yates’ penalty, which earned a vital point for managerless Derby. Sheffield United had a little trouble dispatching lowly Portsmouth, but eventually got there, winning 2-1.

The main thrills in League One were on display at Bolton, with the home side battling back from 3-1 down in a madcap second half to win 4-3 against 10-man Crawley. Shrewsbury claimed a 2-1 win away at Rotherham, while Lincoln were held by basement boys Cambridge.

League Two’s early pacesetters Walsall lost again, 2-1 after leading at Colchester, while Notts County and Salford both won to boost their promotion chances. Crewe suffered a shock 3-0 home defeat by struggling Newport, Courtney Baker-Richardson coming back to haunt his former side.

FA Cup full time scores

  • Everton 0-2 Bournemouth

  • Southampton 0-1 Burnley

  • Wigan 1-2 Fulham

So Bournemouth, Burnley and Fulham are safely through to the fifth round, while Stoke v Cardiff and Preston v Wycombe will play another 30 minutes, plus possible penalties. Coventry 1-4 Ipswich has around 10 minutes to play.

Ronan Darcy and Wigan have the ball in the Fulham net late on … but the flag is up for offside and the celebrations are cut short! Goodness me, that was nearly a famous FA Cup moment for the Latics.

There’s still time for them to conjure something.

I haven’t mentioned Preston v Wycombe because … well it’s been 0-0 and by all accounts there’s been very little to write home about.

As it stands that game and Stoke 3-3 Cardiff are heading to extra-time.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen have been forced to settle for a 0-0 against Wolfsburg, and it was the same score between Augsburg and Mainz. Union Berlin won 4-0 at Hoffenheim.

Dortmund lost 1-2 at home to Stuttgart. BVB were woeful, never looking likely to get a result, even after Julian Brandt pulled one back in 81st minute. His namesake, Julian Ryerson, got sent off shortly after, and that was pretty much that. Their opponents put in an exemplary performance, and VfB look on course for a return to the Champions League next season.

Kári Tulinius

Bolton have pulled it back against Crawley! It’s 3-3 now and what a second half that has been.

It’s been a meek display from Everton this afternoon albeit against a very impressive Bournemouth team.

They’ve not really looked like getting back into the game and now have less than 10 minutes to find two goals.

Updated

Burnley have conceded just one goal in all competitions since Christmas. In the league, they’ve conceded NINE all season.

Whatever Scott Parker is cooking in that Clarets’ defence is working wonders.

GOAL! Coventry 1-4 Ipswich (Philogene, 63)

The tie at the CBS Arena seems to be done and dusted. Jaden Philogene has sunk Coventry and you can probably pencil Ipswich into the fifth round draw.

Updated

GOAL! Southampton 0-1 Burnley (Edwards, 77)

Well, Burnley were hardly going to concede a goal were they? It’s on-loan former Spurs man Marcus Edwards with a debut goal!

Updated

Tell you what, the second halves of these games have really delivered!

As Wigan push for another leveller against Fulham, Coventry thought they’d themselves a lifeline against Ipswich – only to be denied by the offside flag.

League Two leaders Walsall were leading 1-0 at Colchester but have quickly found themselves 2-1 down. Woah.

Norwich and Sheffield United have both snatched leads in the Championship games.

12,281 is a disappointing attendance at Wigan considering they’re hosting a Premier League team. Still, the Latics are going to ned all the support they can get in the final stages of this one.

Fulham are bringing on Alex Iwobi and Adama Traore to try and stretch Wigan.

Updated

GOAL! Stoke 3-3 Cardiff (Colwill, 68)

It’s not over! Colwill has scored his second of the game – and both have been beauties, to be fair.

From 2-0 up, Cardiff looked to have choked, but now anything is possible with another 20 minutes or more to play.

Updated

Wigan 1-2 Fulham: The hosts are showing a heck of a lot more fight in this second half, despite seeing Muniz quickly restore the lead for Marco Silva’s side. The home fans certainly sense the chance to force extra-time.

2013 FA Cup winner Callum McManaman is about to be introduced by his ex-teammate, manager Shaun Maloney.

League Two: Key goals for high-flying Walsall and Notts County have just gone in. Both look like good bets for promotion this season.

It’s been a good day for Aston Villa in the Women’s FA Cup.

League Two: Salford have stormed into a 2-0 lead over Tranmere with a double from Hakeeb Adelakun since the interval. This would be a boost to their playoff/promotion chances.

Mark Hughes’ Carlisle went ahead early doors but have been pinned back by Grimsby – 1-1 there now. And Bromley lead 1-0 at MK Dons.

GOAL! Stoke 3-2 Cardiff (Baker, 57)

Stoke have a penalty and a chance to turn the tables completely on Cardiff… and Lewis Baker makes no mistake. What a comeback.

And there was me booking the Bluebirds’ spot in the fifth round. Maybe not.

An update from Scotland’s Simon McMahon:

Afternoon Dom. It’s Scottish Cup weekend in, eh, Scotland, and there’s the sniff of an upset in Perth, where top flight St Johnstone are being held by Hamilton of the Scottish Championship. Livingston are ahead against Cove Rangers, meaning we could potentially have two teams from outside the Premiership in the last eight. Celtic host Raith in the teatime kickoff, but don’t expect an upset there. Or any mention from Celtic, after another entirely routine and predictable win, about the difference in the teams’ budgets.

A short footballing story:

49 mins: Bolton 0-0 Crawley

50 mins: Bolton 0-1 Crawley

52 mins: Bolton 1-1 Crawley

54 mins: Bolton 1-2 Crawley

GOAL! Wigan 1-2 Fulham (Muniz, 55)

This one will go down as a Rodrgo Muniz goal. That optimism within the Wigan fans didn’t last long. Silence now – apart from among the 2,000 travelling supporters from west London.

Updated

League One: It’s been a day of quickfire goals. No sooner had Crawley taken a surprise lead at Bolton, the Trotters had fired back level. Hepburn-Murphy and Osei-Tutu the respective goalscorers. A good day for double barrels, too.

“Premier League, you’re havin’ a laugh,” is the latest chant from Wigan’s fans, who are also serenading the goalscorer Jonny Smith.

Fulham were all over this game in the first half, but they’ve been pegged back and look shellshocked.

GOAL! Stoke 2-2 Cardiff (Koumas, 46)

From two goals down, Lewis Koumas has gone bang, bang, either side of half-time and Stoke are now level with Cardiff. He’s nutmegged the goalkeeper for this one.

Game on in the Potteries.

GOAL! Wigan 1-1 Fulham (Smith, 50)

Oh my – it’s Jonny Smith with a peach of a goal for Wigan. Where’s that come from?! The Latics have bucked up their ideas fairly quickly!

Fulham are stunned.

Updated

Some of the second halves have begun. How are our chances of a cupset looking? Slim to nothing at the moment. It’s down to Wigan and/or Coventry bucking up their ideas at home to Premier League sides.

It’s Coventry 1-3 Ipswich at half-time. Razor-sharp stuff from the Tractor Boys so far.

I’ve always been of the opinion that a cup run can really help your case if you’re targeting survival or promotion. Kieran McKenna will be thinking/hoping the same.

I’m grabbing a quick coffee. I think some of these players need a caffeine injection or two, too.

League Two: At half-time, it’s goalless between Accrington and Wimbledon, Barrow and Gillingham, Colchester and Walsall, MK Dons and Bromley, Notts County and Morecame … and Salford and Tranmere.

Four goals in nine active games in the fourth tier. Eesh. Thank goodness for Swindon and Port Vale’s 3-3 draw in the earlier game.

GOAL! Coventry 1-3 Ipswich (Clarke, 37)

Oh that’s a costly mistake in possession from Coventry and Ipswich now have a far healthier cushion. Clarke has his second of the afternoon.

Updated

The half-time whistles are sounding around the grounds. Coventry 1-2 Ipswich is the exception, of course. In the FA Cup right now it’s:

  • Everton 0-2 Bournemouth

  • Preston 0-0 Wycombe

  • Southampton 0-0 Burnley

  • Stoke 1-2 Cardiff

  • Wigan 0-1 Fulham

This has been a bit flat so far, I’m afraid to say.

GOAL! Everton 0-2 Bournemouth (Jebbison, 43)

Bournemouth’s blip lasted one game … it was against Liverpool to be fair.

Young striker Daniel Jebbison profits from a fierce Cherries press to double their lead at Everton.

Updated

GOAL! Stoke 1-2 Cardiff (Koumas, 42)

Stoke have themselves a lifeline against Cardiff!

And with James Carragher playing for Wigan against Fulham, it’s another famous Liverpool-leaning football son who has made headlines, Lewis Koumas (son of Jason) netting the goal.

GOAL! Coventry 1-2 Ipswich (Clarke, 28)

You know that chance of a (minor) upset?

Yep, Jack Clarke has just restored the Tractor Boys’ lead to puncture the atmosphere among Sky Blues’ fans. A fine solo goal from the winger, slaloming through the defence before slotting home.

Updated

Falkirk v Partick in the Scottish Championship: After 40 minutes, it’s 2-2 including a goal inside 45 seconds and there’s now been a red card.

Aaaaand it’s now 3-2 to Falkirk. Arfield at the double. Fitbaw heritage.

Updated

After the mammoth effort from Leyton Orient to almost stun Manchester City, this all feels a little after the Lord Mayor’s show, doesn’t it?

The only threat of an upset comes at Coventry – and they were semi-finalists in this competition last season, so it’s hardly a giant killing if they see off Ipswich.

On the off-chance that you prefer your ball to be misshapen:

Championship: I was about to bring you news of Gus Hamer’s goal to put Sheffield United in front against Portsmouth – but the visitors have hit straight back at Bramall Lane via left-back Conor Ogilvie, an unlikely scorer with his right foot. 1-1.

Who’d be a home team in the FA Cup today? Of the eight ties to have started today, in five of them the away team have won or are winning, with the other three all square.

GOAL! Everton 0-1 Bournemouth (Semenyo, 23)

Everton’s James Tarkowski brings down Antoine Semenyo and the Cherries forward dusts himself down and fires home from the spot. Bournemouth lead at Goodison Park.

Updated

GOAL! Wigan 0-1 Fulham (Robinson OG, 23)

Fulham put a lovely move together, which finishes with Rodrigo Muniz heading home. That’s well deserved for the visitors, who have been easily the better side against League One opposition.

That’s actually gone down as a Luke Robinson own goal. Clearly Muniz didn’t get the final touch.

Updated

GOAL! Stoke 0-2 Cardiff (Salech, 19)

New Bluebirds loan signing Yousef Salech has doubled their lead at Stoke. It was a bit of a shambles in the Potters’ defence, but a deft finish by 23-year-old striker to dink it home.

GOAL! Coventry 1-1 Ipswich (Latibeaudiere, 8)

There’s been no shortage of action since this game kicked off – Cov are back level already! Joel Latibeaudiere heads home from a corner. Game on.

Updated

League One: Lincoln lead bottom club Cambridge at Sincil Bank but it’s otherwise goalless.

A good observation from Davis Cross on email:

So the first three teams through have a name beginning with “M”, and the first three out have a name beginning with “L”. Other similarly named teams beware …

The only such team left in the draw is Liverpool.

Everton v Bournemouth has started pretty slowly, with no real chances of note. Both David Moyes and Andoni Iraola have gone fairly strong with their team selections at Goodison, so you’d expect fireworks of some kind. Neither manager will want extra-time.

GOAL! Coventry 0-1 Ipswich (Hirst, 2)

It didn’t kick off until 3.10pm but Ipswich still found time to win and score a penalty, George Hirst slotting home from 12 yards.

A bitter early blow for Frank Lampard and Coventry.

Updated

Cardiff’s recent results make for strange reading: a 3-0 win, a 2-2 draw, a 2-1 win and a 7-0 loss. They won 1-0 at Sheffield United to reach the fourth round.

GOAL! Stoke 0-1 Cardiff (Colwill, 8)

The very talented Rubin Colwill has given Cardiff the lead at fellow Championship side Stoke. Do the Bluebirds smell a cup run?

Charlton fan Dean has got back in touch to confirm he’s no relation to Mark Kinsella. Ah well.

I do, however, welcome emails from anyone who shares a surname with a workaday Premier League player from the early noughties.

The Mark Hughes effect has taken hold at Carlisle already! They’ve gone 1-0 up at Grimsby inside five minutes. Just the Spark they needed?

For what it’s worth, I think more clubs should delay kickoffs if fans cannot get in the ground on time. A few times of late I’ve been stuck outside Old Trafford’s Stretford End due to massive queues at the turnstiles (cheers, Sir Jim).

Who knew that Scott Arfield was now 36 and back playing for Falkirk in the Scottish Championship? I’ve just learned that fact. Anyway, he’s scored inside a minute on his debut against Partick Thistle.

Right, we’re under way in (most of) these 3pm kickoffs. Let’s go!

There’s a delay to kickoff in the Coventry v Ipswich match, due to crowd congestion outside the CBS Arena. It’s now a 3.10pm KO.

Champ roundup.

An email has landed from Dean Kinsella:

Hi Dom. Just a mention for Charlton who continue a great run of form under Nathan Jones. Looks like it might be a battle for us with Leyton Orient for a play off place. I was rather hoping their cup run might have carried on. Great effort from them today.

Yep, Charlton saw off Stevenage 2-0 in one of two early kickoffs in League One, Stockport beat Barnsley 2-1 in the other. Both victorious sides are firmly in the playoff picture.

Any relation to former Addicks midfielder Mark Kinsella, Dean?

Right, I’m warming up my typing fingers ahead of the 3pm whistles.

In a couple of hours’ time, we’ll know the identity of six more sides who have made the FA Cup fifth round, to join both Manchester clubs and Millwall.

It’s a crying shame that a) this went down as an own goal; b) it wasn’t a winner so misses out on FA Cup folklore.

The match reports of the early action have dropped. Get around them.

Some late, late goals have been scored in the day’s early Championship action. Tom Cleverley was denied a huge win as Watford boss by Dennis Cirkin’s late leveller at the Stadium of Light, while Callum Paterson thought he’d bundled in a 93rd minute equaliser for Sheffield Wednesday at The Hawthorns – only for Jayson Molumby to nick it for the Baggies three minutes later. Crazy stuff.

  • Sunderland 2-2 Watford

  • West Brom 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday

With all four of those clubs in the playoff/promotion mix, Norwich and Sheffield United can boost their chances this afternoon as both sides have winnable home games against Derby and Portsmouth respectively.

Elsewhere in FA Cup team news, Wigan coach Shaun Maloney is not playing ball. He’s picked Steven Sessegnon on the Latics’ bench, whereas Marco Silva has plumped for the other twin, Ryan Sessegnon, in the Fulham starting lineup at The Brick Community Stadium.

Man City and Millwall through to fifth round

It finishes Leyton Orient 1-2 Manchester City and Leeds 0-2 Millwall.

A pretty proud Saturday lunchtime for teams in east London, all told.

Updated

There is a surprise in the other early FA Cup kickoff, albeit not a dramatic one given that Leeds have fielded a second string against Millwall. Still, few would have backed to be leading 2-0 at Elland Road at the 90-minute mark.

Millwall’s place in round five seems secure thanks to Femi Azeez’s double either side of half-time. For Leeds, it will be back to the grindstone in terms of their promotion hunt.

Leyton Orient v Manchester City has been quite the cup tie. And Kevin de Bruyne’s class of the bench may have just sealed it for last year’s FA Cup finalists.

Preamble

The FA Cup early knockings haven’t really delivered in recent years – 2023 and 2024 felt like duds in that respect – but after the epic Tamworth v Tottenham and Arsenal v Man United Sunday in the third round, there’s a bit of justified hype around this year’s fourth round.

And even the 3pm kickoffs not chosen for UK broadcast have enough intrigue to fulfil our insatiable appetites. Everton v Bournemouth is a tasty clash between two in-form top flight sides; Southampton v Burnley is a meaty encounter of lower Prem and upper Champ; while the two Sessegnon twins Steven and Ryan will dine at opposite ends of the same table during Wigan v Fulham.

Elsewhere, there’s a quartet of Championship games, including Norwich versus newly-managerless Derby. There’s a decent programme of League One and League Two action too, as well as the Scottish Cup fifth round and the usual Bundesliga fare. You wouldn’t want to follow it anywhere else, would you?

Tuck in and enjoy. Team news will follow.
