Everton's best attack leaves Frank Lampard with hard Demarai Gray or Dominic Calvert-Lewin call

Frank Lampard will probably welcome a new brand of selection headache at Everton.

Over recent weeks the manager has admitted that his early decisions in terms of system, formation and personnel have often been heavily influenced by the current injury situation at the club.

Losing two crucial centre-backs through injury in the opening pair of games, having three players cup-tied for two matches, being without influential stars at the top end of the pitch - it's certainly not been plain sailing.

Isn't that just the story of the Blues' season?

But, there are signs that things are starting to mercifully turn around on that front.

Important players in multiple positions are making their way back to full fitness and adding their considerable advantages to the squad.

That's potentially no more prevalent than in the forward positions.

Demarai Gray missed his side's game against Boreham Wood with a fever, but the hope is that he can be available once more for an important trip to face Spurs on Monday evening.

Meanwhile Dominic Calvert-Lewin is also believed to have been back in training over the weekend as he makes his attempt to be fit for the journey to London.

He's struggled with injuries throughout the course of the season, missing the last two matches with a slight adductor problem.

So, there are now options facing Lampard - arguably for the first time since he took charge of the club.

With that comes tough decisions.

Firstly, the boss will need to decide which formation best suits the players that he currently has at his disposal, with a number of different systems used so far.

Against Man City, Everton used a 4-3-3 to great effect especially in the first half - nullifying the threat from the visitors through the middle of the pitch and managing to win the ball high up the pitch to create their own chances.

That might be a little more tricky to do away from home, but it's the same system that got the Blues all three points the last time they faced Spurs on their own ground.

Beginning the 2020/21 campaign in perfect fashion, Everton secured a 1-0 victory against Tottenham having lined up in a 4-3-3 style - with new signings Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan pivotal at the centre of the pitch.

The goalscorer? Calvert-Lewin, with a towering header to set into motion his best campaign for the club.

It's surely likely that Lampard will want to use a similar system to hopefully provide a similar outcome for his side on Monday night.

It clearly worked against Man City, with Donny van de Beek slotting into the side expertly well.

While the midfield options seem to be wrapped up, injury permitting, there are potentially tough decisions for Lampard to make further up the pitch.

Richarlison's interview earlier in the week suggested that he considers his best position as a No.9 rather than on the flanks.

So, do you bring Calvert-Lewin straight back into the setup and potentially disrupt the Brazilian? He might not have scored against Man City, but he was a pivotal part of Everton's performance.

And there's Gray's return to consider as well.

If Richarlison were to be pushed out to the flank in a 4-3-3 system, with Calvert-Lewin regaining his place down the middle - does the summer signing accompany the pair in the front three?

Anthony Gordon has arguably been Everton's best and most consistent player in recent weeks, while Gray has a case for being the most influential man in the squad across the whole campaign.

Certainly not an easy decision for the manager to make at all.

Of course, he could use all four in the team - but that would likely mean dropping one of the three central midfielders, which has not worked out well in the past for the Blues.

Truth be told, though, this is something of a promising change for Lampard to have.

Instead of being dictated by the injury situation on his decision-making, we're approaching the first opportunities for him to really flex his muscles with this squad.

A time when Everton finally have their best XI on the pitch, whatever that may be, can't come quick enough.
