Asmir Begovic 7
Brought in from the cold for this huge fixture due to illness for Jordan Pickford, in truth the Everton understudy goalkeeper had few saves to make with one of his biggest tests keeping out a speculative long-range free-kick from Fabian Schar after he was caught off his line.
Seamus Coleman 8
Determined St Patrick’s Day display from the captain who was forced into making a couple of superb last-ditch tackles to deny Ryan Fraser in a single attacking sequence in the first half.
Ben Godfrey 7
Welcome physicality from one of the few members of the Everton team possessing previous experience of a relegation dog fight. Operating at left-back tonight after Frank Lampard switched to a back four, he wasn’t able to make as many of those marauding runs forward as the hosts would have liked.
Mason Holgate 7
A fairly assured display from the spare man at the back, he generally kept a cool head in possession but some of his more ambitious passes brought groans of frustration when they didn’t come off.
Michael Keane 8
Stepped up to the physical challenge of having to deal with Chris Wood, this was an encouraging return for him after his horror show at Tottenham Hotspur when suffering with a fever.
Allan 6
Like Keane, the Brazilian appeared to have benefitted from being dropped against Wolves last time out after being overrun at Spurs and came back looking much more mobile but he was then sent off for a challenge on Allan Saint-Maximin deemed to be out of control following a VAR review.
Abdoulaye Doucoure 7
Much better than his ragged display on Sunday, he kept his discipline in the centre of the park even though his leggy runs forward were restricted.
Anthony Gordon 8
Everton’s brightest spark again, he produced their best chance with a wicked 20-yard shot that Martin Dubravka turned around the post and also roused the home crowd when winning a committed 50/50 challenge with Ryan Fraser before almost picking out Demarai Gray.
Demarai Gray 6
He’s been the Blues’ most-consistent attacking threat this season but is still shaking off the rust following his recent injury and despite some dangerous runs, his touch still looked a bit heavy at times.
Alex Iwobi 10
Had produced a hard-working display beforehand but became Everton’s unlikely hero when he calmly latched on to Calvert-Lewin’s through-ball to beat Dubravka.
Richarlison 6
Worked hard holding the ball up but found himself with his back to goal on too many occasions rather than being able to run at Newcastle’s defence in a fashion that would have been more dangerous.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (on 76 for Gray) 7
Still in search for an elusive first goal since August, he went close when picked out by Richarlison yet just couldn’t make contact but he then turned provider to set up Iwobi for his goal.
Andre Gomes (on 87 for Richarlison) 7
Worked hard and kept his shape when Everton were down to 10 men.
Andros Townsend (on 90 for Gordon)
